What Is Your Opinion About Fire Extinguisher Safety?

By Peter Thomas

Did you get to adulthood and realise that you know nothing about how to use a fire extinguisher? That is the case with so many people, especially those in the older generation. The older generation did not have the exposure to the use of fire extinguishers that there is today, nor were they exposed to the method of using a fire extinguisher.

If you have older parents, or you yourself are in the 60+ bracket, it would be a good idea for you to make yourself familiar with the use of a fire extinguisher.

Why? Well, as you get older it is harder to learn about new things, but also as you get older you get more careless and more forgetful. Not only that, you move more slowly, so if you had to get out of a fire you are not as nimble as you used to be.

A LITTLE SLOW WITH THE MEMORY

with a forgetful memory you may not remember to go back to the stove to attend to something cooking with fat

you may leave a cigarette burning

a heater too close to an open window and curtain, or

leave the heater on all night unattended

not work the clothes dryer properly and have a fire

You could be a really busy person and go rushing out the door forgetting something. There are many reasons why a poor memory could cause a fire.

NOT SO AGILE

as you get older you are slower getting out of a chair

you nod off at irregular times

you trip over more easily

you dont hear quite the same as you used to

any one of these getting older experiences might stop you from containing a fire as fast as you might have in the past.

None of these reasons may put your life in danger, but there is one thing for sure and that is if you have a fire extinguisher in your home, and you know how to use it, you have a much better chance of containing any sort of flair up.

You have worked all your life to reach your latter years and it is a time to enjoy it. The last thing you need is to have a life threatening disaster like a fire, just because you did not have a fire extinguisher on hand.

If you are reading this article, and have a parent in the latter years, and they do not have a fire extinguisher, do them and yourself a favour, buy them one and teach them how to use it. Put it near the exit door and put an Instructions sign right beside it. It really can give you peace of mind that you did your best to protect them.
