Krav Maga is the official method of self defense for the Israeli military. They needed a self defense system that was easy to learn, (didn't require years of training like traditional martial arts) and effective.
Originally created by Imi Lichtenfeld in Czechoslovakia, Krav Maga was initially used by the Jews to help protect themselves during the second world war. After the war, Imi continued to develop his system until it was eventually adopted as the official hand to hand combat system for all Israeli military and police forces.
What makes Krav Maga so effective and easy to learn? Simple, there are no kata's, no traditional Dojo rules, instead the practioners drill over and over proven effective hand to hand combat techniques until they become second nature.
Anyone can learn Krav Maga, but if youre lacking in physical fitness youre going to find the classes very intense. Krav Maga classes are typically built around a lot of cardio, and they continually drill self defense techniques over and over again until you just want to quit. It's not uncommon to test your skills against 3 or 4 opponents until you are able to perform the techniques with ease and skill.
The idea is to engrain the techniques under high stress and fatigue until the practitioner can perform the moves without hesitation and thinking. This is what makes Krav Maga so effective. This constant practice under simulated real world combat conditions is what sets Krav Maga apart from other traditional martial arts.
