Challenging Children With Math

By Angel Chodie

There are many different teaching techniques that a teacher will use with their students. One powerful technique that is used by many teachers is challenging their students. This is especially effective for the subject of math.

Giving students a challenge has many benefits for students. It helps them learn quicker and more thoroughly if they are feeling just enough pressure. Many people may think this pressure is a negative thing, but it has shown to be positive in so many ways.

Some students feel that a math challenge helps solidify some of the easier concepts. This happens when they are being challenged out of their comfort zone. Students will grasp the concepts of math more effectively this way.

When given a challenge, students find it rewarding and feel successful once they're finished. Students are usually left feeling like they want a bigger challenge when they approach an easy problem that does not take much effort to solve. If they are given a challenge, the outcome is usually more positive and leaves the student feeling accomplished.

Challenging students keeps them on their toes and engages their brain in a rewarding way. This will also keep the student from being lazy. Good work ethic is then taught at the same time.

Math games can be a way to challenge students. Math games may seem like an easy way out, but can actually be a great learning tool. Students find that they are being challenged to better their math skills by winning or getting the right answer in the math game.

Usually challenges work well with most children, but there are always exceptions. Students with learning disabilities often find that being put under the pressure of being challenged is more frustrating than helpful. There are definitely ways to adapt to these kinds of children.

Presenting a student with a good challenge is a great way to encourage learning. This benefits them in many ways including their self-confidence and their determination to learn. It's important that teachers always challenge their students to learn.
