By Iva Cannon

It is common to have members of the family living away from home. They may be there for business, work, or study. Others may have gone temporary for vacation. If any of them happens to die in the foreign land, their bodies would be required to be transported back to their home country for interment. A few procedures are required for you to get necessary authorization and documentation to have the body home. Shipping human remains requires special means of transport that ensure dignity and care.

Several shipping firms do transport human remains to different parts of the world. You can check if there is a local firm that does international mortuary transfers or you need to contact an international office. A local firm is better placed since it understands local rules and regulations and how to work within the guidelines.

The home embassy has to go through all requests to transport the remains back home. You mat first apply for a death certificate and file it at the embassy together with permits and passports. If any inquiry to the death is pending, you may be required to wait for conclusion of such investigations. The consulate at the embassy checks on the documents and allows you to transport the body if they are correct.

Cremation is an option that your family may consider. The trend is rising and becoming accepted in many quarters. Cremation is a cheaper option compared to bringing the body home. Less space is required for the cargo. Furthermore, if your country has so many requirements for transporting human remains, you can go around by having cremated remains instead. Cremation also removes the urgency common in transporting human bodies due to deterioration.

Some cultures around the globe share out the cremated remains among close members to the deceased. Those that live far away from home need to arrange for transportation of the cremated remains. You may also transport the remains to a designer to incorporate them in a jewelry or vase for preservation. These scenarios as still held as transporting the dead.

Most shipping companies have a special package for transporting the remains that operates within the framework spelled out by the law. Special mailing is also done to ensure that the remains are held with outmost care and respect that they deserve and are not mixed with general cargo.

The cremated remains can be packaged in simple wooden boxes, glass to decorative urns. If these remains are to be shipped for long distances padding is important. This means that you will need to have two containers, an inner counter, and an outer container. The inner container should be hardy enough to absorb any shock that may come from handling.

You can only bring the remains home if it is not illegal to do so in your country. The package is sent as priority package to the recipient. Packaging of the remains should be done as specified by law. The post may send remains in a funeral urn.
