Harsh Realities Of Gender Discrimination In Sports Media

By Tammie Caldwell

There are various forms of discrimination. It has started a long time ago when the act of slavery has occurred among those who belong to different races, especially the Black people. Also tracing back history, everyone knows about Genocide and the elimination of the Jews by the Germans simply because they think they are the higher forms of race in the world. It was a time of brutality and trauma. Children were separated from their families and they were brutally abused before getting killed. It was all because of their bloodline.

Although not as brutal and excessive as in the past, discrimination still happens to date in the form of bullying. This happens in schools, institutions, organisations, or even randomly on the road, and in media. Gender discrimination in sports media is an example. There are also athletes who are bullied and teased because of their nationality or race regardless of how good they are in playing.

An example for this is the one that happened in NBA. An official was ousted completely in the commission because of mocking an African American player. Different organizations and individuals across the world condemned this unethical and irresponsible remark. So long as the player is doing great and has entertained people, there is no way to classify him according to his color.

There is also existing gender discrimination in different areas of entertainment and in sports. Lesbians, gays, trans genders, and bis are almost being condemned for who and what they truly are. It is so sad how they are being treated and mocked because if their sexual orientation. Despite the efforts of the LGBT community, they are still being mocked by guiltless individuals.

In sports, there are only very few individuals who are very open about their sexual orientation. The LGBT community has tried to change their fate and the perception of people towards them. That is why they are encouraging all those who are like them to participate and come out in the open.

When the public discovers this truth, they are being judged all the more. Then they are mocked and then spoofed in television gag shows or in parodies in social media video streaming sites. In addition, they become the talk of the virtual town.

The public are so creative in finding different topics, art, and videos in response to any issue release by the media. Media, on the other hand, takes advantage in order to get more views, attention, and recognition. They somehow sensationalize this particular kind of issue because the public finds it amusing.

In schools, on the other hand, there are actually juveniles who either die or taken under the custody of the juvenile court because of committing a bullying related crime. The issue of race is still very evident in schools and the blacks and Asians are usually the victims. As a result, there are violence and crimes possibly because of self defense or revenge.

This is very disturbing. The media influences people both positively and negatively. But unmindfully, the it is already suggesting bullying and discrimination in television shows by illustrating the funny side of the issue. However, there are already some organizations, public and private, that push programs and projects that will put the welfare of bullying victims in the front seat.
