There are several minerals and rocks that are polished and used for jewelry. The diamond and gold for instance, are among the most expensive jewelry items while copper and silver are also common jewelry minerals. Gems are rare stones and come in stunning beauty, wide variety and colors. Many people are not aware that a diamond jewelries are also part of fine gemstone jewelry. There are several other gemstones that also look good in jewelry and cost far less as compared to diamond.

Gemstones are available in hundreds of varieties and the process of buying a gemstone or a jewelry that has gemstones is often a hard task. Before you set out to buy one, it will be of great help if you have the some knowledge about the gemstones as well as their characteristics.

The saturation on the other hands is its purity or color intensity and the tone represents the color depth and can vary from light to dark. The value increases with color intensity. Other than the color, the second consideration is gem clarity.

The second aspect in your selection should be the clarity. It describes the flaws present or absent either on the surface or inside the stone. It plays a crucial role in the gem value and quality. Generally, it is very rare to find a gem that is completely flawless and are thus very expensive. The value of diamond get most affected by flaws, however, the value of most other stones are not affected much by the flaws not unless these flaws affect its durability.

The gems also come in different cuts and according to experts, polishing or cutting is determined by the color. For optical efficiency, shallow cuts are used for highly saturated colors while deep cuts help increase the vividness of the less saturated ones. The common cuts include Table, Square, Brilliant, Rose, Cabochon, Step, Emerald, and Triangular.

The other important aspect is carat weight. Since the gems are sold depending on their weight and not their size, the heavier ones are likely to cost more than the lighter ones. Generally, it is your budget that determines the carat you choose. However, you are better off buying an average sized gem that has quality cut, clarity and color than choosing a larger one that sacrifices color, clarity and cult.

The other clue is gemstone cut. As much as possible, the client is advised to always choose the ideal cut gems that have the desired shape. It does not really cost more to get a good cut, but it may add a lot to the gem beauty. The other consideration is the carat weight. This largely depends on the buyer's budget. With a decent budget, it is better to choose an average size gem that has a good looking color, clarity and cut instead of choosing a larger one that means sacrificing the color, clarity and cut.

The last consideration to have in mind is the enhancement or treatment. The natural gems are more attractive and tend to cost more. However, if the gemstone is treated or enhance, then try to find out the method of treatment used, and if the treatment is temporary or permanent and if there is any special care required.
