Cable Seals & The 3 Standards That Matter

By Jason McDonald

People rely on cable seals because they are among the best security measures imaginable. In order for these expectations to be met, though, the seals in question must adhere to certain standards. Without these, the products that people rely on so much will not be as effective as predicted. Here are the three most important standards that not only help these seals stand out but instill confidence in those that utilize them.

ISO-17712:2013 - If you would like to discuss general practices, as they relate to seals, you will want to discuss the ISO. Not only does it cover many of the general standards that must be followed - inspection, documentation, storage, etc. - but it covers three main categories of seals. For the uninitiated, these are known as High Strength, Security, and Indicative. These are just a few reasons why seal manufacturers must adhere to the ISO.

C-TPAT - When it comes to security, more than anything else, the U.S. Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism is worth discussing. The C-TPAT standard is designed so that every seal that is created is secure. They must be able to pass the High Strength Test before they are shipped out for the public to obtain. This is yet another standard that the likes of American Casting & Manufacturing hold in high regard, and understandably so.

ISMA - Also known as the International Seal Manufacturers Association, this particular standard is also an organization that focuses on seal manufacturing and distribution. It is meant to build trust between manufacturing companies and consumers so that the latter can obtain products they can trust. How does one enter the ISMA, you may wonder? This requires one to follow various standards, including those related to security. Once these are followed, one can enter ISMA, provided they continually maintain the organization's standards.

The main reason why someone would purchase cable seals is security. They want to know that they will be given the best level of service imaginable, which is ultimately why these standards are put into place. When they are adhered to, the seals in question become that much more worthwhile. People will be more likely to purchase them, but only when requirements such as these are abided by as close as possible.
