St Louis Mixed Martial Arts: Which is the Best Kind of Muay Thai Kickboxing School?

By Kathleen P. Williamson

Kickboxing, or Muay Thai, is a centuries old sport that started as a war tool. In this period, battles were fought in close proximity with swords but also bare hands and legs.

As time went by, it became a sport rather than a way of survival in war, and hands were wrapped in horsehide and eventually gloves. It is so popular currently that it is considered a segment of traditional boxing techniques.

This form basically uses martial arts-style kicks with boxing style punches for total contact competition. Whenever you hear someone talk about kickboxing or Thai Boxing, they are discussing Muay Thai. Kickboxing is just the modern name.

If you want to study this art, you should go to the best school you can. Look up all the schools in your neighborhood that offer it.

Next, go to them yourself for the best observation. Look at how the classes are taught.

Is the teacher expecting the students to learn merely be repeating his motions? Or does the instructor break down the technique and explain it fully? As with any other profession, just because an instructor is highly qualified and perhaps has a wall full of awards and trophies doesn't he is a good teacher.

Many facilities divide classes according to ability or age. Watch the class you would be joining.

You should also talk to the owner or manager of the school. S/he should be willing and capable of explaining every aspect of the classes. Learn about qualifications, prior training experience, and if they are actively involved in professional groups.

As a strong competitive sport, you will want to choose a school that accommodates your fear, if you have any, toward sparring in close competition. If it not correctly taught, the student will become disillusioned and even frightened.

Another good step to take is to talk to some of the current students of the school. Find out how they feel about the style, the sport, the competition, the instructors, and notice the level of enthusiasm with which they talk about the school to you. Make sure the building is clean.

Choosing the right Muay Thai Kickboxing school is a matter of personal taste, and choosing the wrong one can turn you off from the sport. So you can see that it is important to take these steps to find the best instruction. You can then be sure that you will find the best school.
