Do you know what the weakest security element in many houses is? Would you be surprised to know that it's a door? In fact it's the biggest door in most homes and also one that many burglars can unlock within 10 seconds.
It turns out (according to the Chamberlain Garage Trends Survey) that these days this specific door is used by about two thirds of homeowners as their primary entrance and furthermore, a third of the survey sample place such trust in this door that they don't bother to lock the internal door(s) past this one.
The door in question is of course the garage door. This has in the past few years superseded the conventional main entrance door as the most popular entry to the home. This trend is almost certainly due to the advent of electronic mechanized garage door openers coupled with the fact that most folk these days arrive and depart by automobile.
The thing is though - garage doors are remarkably simple to break open. Even doors fitted with the latest electronic devices and motorized openers can be thwarted with little trouble by experienced thieves. Once past the doors any intruder is then well protected from detection as they go about breaking into the house itself through the connecting door (which as mentioned above is often anyway unlocked nearly half the time).
If your garage door has poor security then it renders the window bolts and deadlocks you may have fitted elsewhere more or less redundant. And even if you are the type to actually lock the internal garage to house door, the fact is that your garage provides perfect shelter for any intruder to set about breaking in to your home (quite possibly using any tools you might store in the garage to help them).
What then is the answer? Pretty obviously beefing up security on your garage doors should be a priority and installing (and remembering to use) a simple garage deadbolt provides an easy and inexpensive deterrent to the opportunist intruder.
But if you want security you can really rely on then installing high security garage doors is the way to go. Among the best are those that are for all apparent purposes regular wooden garage doors, but internally contain reinforced steel rods and plates. These can withstand anything even the most determined intruder can attack them with for a considerable period of time.
In the end deciding the balance of costs versus benefits comes to down a judgement call. But consider the benefits: superior protection for valuables and family members; cut insurance premiums and add to your property's value; and scope to extend the use of the space knowing that it provides a well protected environment.
