Its official folks, the first title defense by Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida will come at UFC 104 on Oct. 24 versus former Pride standout Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua. Lets face it folks this is going to be an amazing fight! Both amazingly talented fighters in theyre prime.
The card marks the company's first show in Los Angeles since UFC 60 in May 2006, and the first event in California since UFC 76 in September 2007. "It's been two years since the UFC was in Southern California, and we knew we had to bring something special for our return to the capital of mixed martial arts," said UFC president Dana White.
"Lyoto Machida captured the imagination of fight fans with his knockout of Rashad Evans. And while (Machida) seems unbeatable right now, Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua not only has the tools to beat any 205-pounder in the world, but he's coming off a knockout of Chuck Liddell in his last fight, so his confidence is sky-high. This has the potential to be one of the greatest light-heavyweight title fights ever."
Also announced for UFC 104 is a heavyweight match-up between Cain Velasquez and Ben Rothwell. Velasquez was scheduled to fight Shane Carwin but Carwin is now challenging Brock Lesnar at UFC 106 for the heavyweight title. Also at UFC 106, it appears the Tito Ortiz-Mark Coleman light heavyweight match is all but official. I think Lesnor will be holding the belt for a while. I cant see many people being able to deal with his size and speed. I think the best way to beat Lesnor is on the feet. Yes, he has huge power in his hands. I believe if Mir was able to keep the fight on the feet he may have been able to inflict some damage. Once the 260 lbs monster is on top of you its not going to be pretty.
Ortiz, making his return to UFC after an 18-month absence, recently posted a video of him signing and faxing his contract for the fight. UFC 106 takes place Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Im excited to see Ortiz back in the cage. Love him or hate him, he is very entertaining, and a huge crowd puller. For the UFC its a smart move! Not sure how Tito will fair after such a long layoff but I will bet it will be an entertaining fight.
