Prepare for Attack Avoidance

By Steve Thibeault

Even though we live in a dangerous environment, this should not cause us to be prisoners of our own home. We need to use common sense and adhere to certain ideals, but still hold our head up high when we go out. No one has a right to tell us what to do, yet we should be prepared to exercise attack avoidance if we need to at any time.

It is certainly true that we can never guarantee what is going to happen when we set foot out of the door. Sadly, the elderly, very young, frail or females may fall victim to the unwanted attentions of another, simply because they are seen as easier. Practice attack avoidance whenever you can and the odds of you falling victim will shrink.

Fitness is very important, as we all tend to lead rather sedentary lives. Sometimes it is not easy for us to get our daily 30 minutes of exercise indoors and we may not have room for a treadmill or gym. When you get out on the street for exercise, make sure that you choose a route that is heavily trafficked where all possible. It is best if you choose a known jogging trail that is not remote and has plenty of other participants. If not, choose a road that is well lit and has a lot of vehicular traffic.

Whenever you go out and especially if you fall into one of the more vulnerable groups, always travel with someone else. If your daily forays involve exercise, this is a good time to strike up a relationship with someone who has similar goals and make sure that you do this together. It is amazing how this can help in your goal of attack avoidance and deter other would-be criminals.

If, for one reason or another, you must travel alone, displaying the right attitude and confidence can be remarkably effective in attack avoidance. Many criminals are just looking for random opportunities and make snap decisions as to who to assault. Portray an aura of self confidence and determination and this might just be enough.

Think about getting a dog, for companionship and for safety. It is true that a dog is a man's best friend and this can be true especially when you are out alone. Most criminals will think again before accosting somebody who has a dog, for fear of being bitten.

To be really sure that you are safe when you go out, carry one of the self-defense devices, great weapons in attack avoidance. Keep pepper spray or a taser at hand and all you need to do is to show that you have the weapon to put many random criminals to flight.

The number one rule in attack avoidance is to be prepared. Don't become a statistic on the list of crimes against the person. Do plenty of research to see what self-defense devices you should carry and always stick to well lit streets and roads or travel with a companion.
