Getting The Necessary Materials To Develop Your Skills In Calligraphy

By Tiffany M. Peebles

Next time you get an invitation to a wedding or other formal event, take a look at the fancy script that it's written in. It's called calligraphy. It's an elaborate style of writing that is often used to convey formality and convention. It is used on diplomas, certificates, invitations of all kinds and more. Those that do calligraphy study a special art form that incorporates the flow of the pen with the flourishes in the design. You can learn to do calligraphy with proper instruction and a lot of practice.

To get started you need to have the correct material. You can't do calligraphy with just a pencil and paper. The key to beautiful handwriting is to have the right supplies. Fortunately, you can get what you need at your local art or office supply store.

Your first lesson in calligrapher will advise you to use a pencil, eraser and a ruler to outline or trace your letters. You fill the in with ink later. This is how you get started, once you improve you can move on and forgo the pencil step. Beginners usually need this extra training.

When you move on to using a pen, you will also need heavier paper. The heavier the better and it helps if it is acid-free.

When selecting a pen you should look for ones that have flat tips instead of the ballpoint pens you often see being used.

You can't do fine calligraphy with just any old pen, calligraphy pens are made to use special, interchangeable tips. The tips are designed to make thick and thin lines used for beautiful calligraphy. The ink is special, too. It should be permanent.

Now that you've assembled all the supplies you need, you can get underway. You may want to take lessons or learn on your own via DVD or instructional books. If you don't have a lot of money to spend you can just find some calligraphy you like and begin copying it.

As with most creative arts, you need to practice before you get better. The good thing is that the better your skills the more beautiful your calligraphy will be and you can even market your skills and look for work.
