How To Perform An Excellent Keynote Speech

By Katina Flores

Making a public speech can be terrfiying, in particular if it's something you have never done before. A keynote speech can be made at any event. As a common example, if you are best man at a wedding. Don't let yourself come out in cold sweats and start quaking in your boots. Here are a few tips on how to make a good keynote speaker.

Know what you are talking about

Do you want to listen to someone that hasn't a clue what they are saying? Being serious, it's important to feel comfortable about what you are talking about. Let's face it, if you are the best man at a wedding, you should probably know about the groom already. However getting to know the bride although difficult, is worth it for delivering a good speech. Again, if you are a business speaker for the day, know what you are talking about. If you are talking about a new product, make sure you are an expert on it before you get up on stage. Test the product or service for yourself. Use the power of the internet to perform your research. Any company product should also have a detailed website explaining the benefits of the product. For generic products or services, why not try Youtube or Wikipedia? If the product is well known, try Wikipedia or even Youtube for further information.

Research the audience

Interaction with the audience is key. If you stood and just talked for an hour, you'll bore your audience. They won't listen to you, and it'll do your reputation no good. With this, do try and avoid giving a bad speech. Learn about your audience before the speech. What companies do they work for? Are there any shared interests? Can you teach them something useful? Engage in your audience in an interesting and stimulating manner. Use visual aids if necessary. Powerpoint could be used. Sometimes it can be a difficult choice to decide whether to allow the audience to participate. It does, to a degree depend on what audience you are speaking to. Bringing up confident participants can work great. Don't do what some speakers do and pick the nervous members of the audience. We've all been there!

Work for your employer

Working for your employer is key. If you need to sell to them, make sure you do it as best and non-aggressively as possible. If you are promoting their product, make sure you do them justice. Should you fail, don't expect to be asked to give a speech again.

Practising equals best preparation

The worse keynote speech will come through lack of preparation. The most skilled keynote speakers will practise over and over again. How about using cue cards? Commit the speech to memory. Then if you do get stuck you have your cue cards to fall back on. So whether you are speaking at wedding, or making a motivational speech to your sales team- best of luck!
