Finding the Right Yard Lighting

By Dan Martin

Yard lighting can be used to make you feel more secure about your home at night, and it can also be a huge help to the image of your home and home. There are numerous methods of brightening the outside of your house. Ranging from lantern-style lamps posted near your front and back doors to garden lights along the walkways, there are literally thousands of methods to light up the yard surrounding your house and play it up quite a bit.

Lights that are lantern-styled to brighten up the back or front patio are common on just about every house you see every day, but why just stay with using the norm? A few more pieces of yard lighting in specific areas surrounding your home can make your lawn the envy of everybody in neighborhood.

If you happen have a couple of walkways, garden lights are definitely always a nice feature to allow visitors to see the ground while they are heading up to your front door. These kinds of lights are also fantastic touches in the backyard if you happen to have a deck or a walkway there too. Long and tall lamp lights are also attractive and give off a more classic feel, but they can be much brighter than you might need. In case you are thinking about one or two tall lamp lights it might be better for you to to find models that feature changeable brightness so they are not overwhelming on your other yard decorations.

If you host several outdoor parties at your home, then having at least a few outdoor lights is a necessity. Leaving your guests in the darkness or in a dimly lit back yard is generally very rude, and could even deter them from coming to your parties later on.

Flood light fixtures are always a great method of yard lighting if you are worrying more about safety than decorating. These are usually very bright so you can see everything in and around the area they are pointed towards. Many models are also motion-activated so that you can always know if something is happening in your back yard that you do not know about. These lights are great as preliminary safety measures and they are easy to install as well.

You may be looking for a better looking yard or one that feels more secure, but no matter what there is a huge choice of fixture options available for you to choose from. Be careful to not but light bulbs that are far too bright, as your neighbors will probably not not be very pleased with excessive amounts of light coming out from your home every night. It might be difficult, but also try not to install too many lights as well. Several semi-dim lamps can also make for a large amount of light, and that could be equally as inconsiderate as installing ones that are too bright. Yard lighting can be confusing to install just right, but it will be worth the trouble in the end.
