By Jeremy Richards

There are times when people ask me, after they've read a locksmith article, what some of the words mean and I felt it would be helpful to dedicate one of these articles to explain what some popularly used terms mean. There are, to be sure, many different words and job descriptions in the locksmith industry and there will always those who are inquisitive and want to know more. Of course the following terms and definitions are here to learn about, it will also be something that comes in handy if and when you need the help of a locksmith is Indianapolis.

One of the more curious terms is master key. You can easily find many different articles and information about a master key, which is a key working on many locks where one key can open a lock, but the master key can open all that it is set for. There are a lot of people who feel that a master key is a skeleton key and that is why I am including that definition in this article, so as to clear up such a mythical item.

A skeleton key is a thinly cut warded lock key, and it is cut thin to bypass the wards in a lock, and the skeleton key is also called the bit key because it has a different amount of bits to it for use on locks. While access control system can be easy to understand, sometimes it is thought of in many different lights. For an easy understanding of this, imagine if you have a business here in Indianapolis and you'd like to make sure that you can control the access that people have to enter a given area or building.

This will be something you can do with an access control system that will let those with proper access have the ability to enter, while you control security. An access control system can range in security level from low to high with locks, biometrics such as finger prints and eye scans, keyless entry and CCTV.A very popular piece that is used, and also very cost effective, is a strike plate, something that is highly recommended by Indianapolis locksmiths.

The strike plate will give added protection to a door and the bolt that is part of it is put in to the door jamb or the floor and is amazingly successful when used to stop forced entry, like kick ins. The strike plate is something that works very well for those who require more cost effective protection at home or work. The VATS and PATS system is seldom known by those who do not have one. Vehicle anti theft systems are very popular now in newer automobiles you find on the streets and roads of Indianapolis, and it's also known as a PASS, which is a personalized automotive security system, and then PATS means passive anti theft system, which is another variation of the same thing. There is a lot of info about these systems and you can also simply consult your automobiles manual.
