The Different Brainwave States

By Dan Murphy

Utilizing binaural beats will allow you to achieve varied states of mind with ease. These differing frequencies allow your mind to tune into different states. These states assist with a varying number of items, including helping in positive thinking, focus, learning, relaxing, achieving a meditative state and many more.

Over the years, scientists have discovered that different frequencies can be related to various states of mind. For an example, a frequency of 1 to 3 Hz (Hertz, or the number of changes per minute) may be associated with deeper sleep. Binaural beats allow you to listen to a certain frequency to allow you to achieve different states of mind. And today (versus 150 years ago), it's very easy to change your brainwave frequencies with just a CD or MP3 player and headphones.

One of the questions you may have is how someone's mind can "tune in" to a frequency. In order to do this, two different sounds (one in each ear) will be played at similar (but different) Hertz. For instance, in the case of binaural beats, one tone could be administered at 50 Hz in one ear and at 55 Hz in the other ear. What this creates is a "difference" of 5 Hz, which causes the binaural beat. This beat then creates the state of mind that your brain can tune into.

The frequencies which the binaural beats can focus on are referred to as theta, beta, alpha and delta states. These four categories each target different frequencies and thus different states of mind. There is a chance you have heard of these states previously, and they are commonly used when discussing binaural beats.

The first category is within the 13 Hz to 25 Hz range and assists to achieve a feeling of alertness and also helps remove anxiety and stress. This is the range for beta frequencies.

The second category would be the alpha frequencies. The alpha frequencies are from 8 to 12 Hz. When the binaural beat is delivered in this range, it assists in "superlearning," positive thinking, and also a state of light relaxation.

From 4 to 7 Hz, you can receive benefits that include deeper relaxation (which is fantastic for meditation), memory improvement, better focus, and many other benefits. This is referred to as the theta range.

Lastly, the delta frequencies will occur at less than 4 Hz. When the frequencies are in this range, this helps with deep sleep, an increase in immune functions, and loss of body awareness.

As is clearly shown here, there are a huge number of benefits that binaural beats have to offer... And what is mentioned here doesn't cover each one of them either. What is wonderful about them is that they require no practice or experience at all -- Just someone with an open mind to get started.
