Menopause Is A Natural Stage In Life

By Liana Badea

Menopause is a transitional change in a woman's life when the menstrual function ceases and the body adjusts to a lower level of hormones.

Menopause occurs when a woman reaches the age of fifty, but may occur as early as forty and as late as fifty-five years of age.

For many women menopause can be a difficult time because it symbolizes the end of reproductive years. Despite this fact, the end of menstruation should be seen as a welcoming change that is appropriate for older age.

Menopause is much more than a biological event, it is mostly a psychological process. Social and cultural factors contribute greatly to how women react to natural menopause. In some cultures women look forward to menopause because it brings with it greater respect, while in other cultures menopause is seen as a total loss of femininity and beauty.

Seeing menopause as a natural and welcoming event reduces the intensity and frequency of menopause symptoms. If our society adopted this attitude and changed the cultural view towards older women, the symptoms of menopause would not exist.

The conventional way of treating menopause is hormone replacement therapy. By the 1970's estrogen replacement therapy was the number one medical treatment of choice for women at menopause. Unfortunately the consequences of this treatment were not fully understood. It is now well established that hormone replacement therapy is associated with an increased risk of developing different types of cancer.

Hormone changes are the essence of the natural process of menopause. The symptoms of menopause will diminish once the body has adjusted to a lower level of hormones, that after all is appropriate for non reproductive years. This will happen without any treatment.

Today's technology provides access to a huge amount of information on health issues. Women are getting educated about their choices on how to approach menopause. Majority of them are choosing the alternative medicine, as numerous natural prescriptions are available to help relieve menopause symptoms without any side effects.
