Staying Safe With Winter Running Tips

By Arthur Andrews

Most people across the world have had to overcome some wintertime pounds. It is often difficult to keep in shape when the weather turns cold. The calories consumed during thanksgiving and Christmas can easily become extra unwanted weight. It is important for most people to continue their daily exercise routine, even if it means going for a run on a cold winter's day. With some helpful winter running tips, it is possible to stay active in the winter months.

The first thing to consider when running during the winter months is the fact that you should protect your body. Since it is cooler, you will need to be sure to stay warm to protect your body from the cold weather. Be sure to keep your extremities such as your hands and your feet warm. Wearing socks, comfortable gloves, ear muffs and toboggans are a great way to keep yourself warm.

Although you are trying to keep warm and cozy, it is quite important not to over do it. Do not bundle up too much, this can cause more harm than good. Your body has to breathe in order to cool down and there are ways to becoming overly hot when doing physical exercises.

Always stay hydrated when working out, whether it is in the winter or in hotter weather. The muscles and organs still need water to operate properly. Drinking water is one of the best things you can do for your body.

When you are running, it is important to breathe through your nose and not through your mouth. Taking the time to remember to breathe through your nose can help keep you from getting sore throats and other cold symptoms that can come from breathing in the cold air through your mouth. It can also help keep you from getting chest pain and other things that can commonly occur while running outside in the cold winter months.

It is not a good idea to do physical exercises in the rain. Running in the wet climates can often make you sick. Remember, warm feet are a necessity to staying safe when running. If it is wet and snowy outside, it may be impossible to keep dry and safely run.

Joining a gym or purchasing a treadmill will allow you to do your daily routine of walking or running without having to fight the cold of winter or the heat of summer. For more information contact the local gym or sporting goods store.
