What You May Need: Disaster Survival Kits

By Paul F. Joshua

There are some places out there that sell these disaster survival kits. However, you pay a small fortune for them. Sure, you would probably buy one if it came down to it. However, if you want to save a little money, you can create one for your family in case disaster strikes. There are a few common things that any kit should have. We will walk you through a few of these.

The first thing that any kit should have is something that people like you and I cannot do without. This is the main things that keep our bodies going. They are the nutrients in which we function day to day. What we are referring to are food and water. Normally, you should put in a gallon of water though some people put two gallons in. Then you need the food to be something that can be stored away and will not parish. The best foods are canned foods.

Another thing that you should include is a radio. This should be battery operated as you will not always have power. The way that officials get through to you and the community is by way of radio and television. If the power goes out you need to know what they are ordering people to do. This way everyone stays safe.

Things to keep warm are always a good idea as well. For instance blankets so that you do not get hypothermia. There should be extra clothing and supplies to practice as much proper hygiene as possible. The warmer you are the less likely you are to be in any serious danger. If you pass out you should have something with you that can help them to identify you. That is how people can check on you. It is a frightening thing but you do have to be prepared for it.

For children, you should have something to keep them calm and content. You will already be under enough stress without adding to it with fussy kids. Pack some playing cards or paper that they can draw on. Something comforting works too. For babies, make sure you pack diapers and formula.

If you have children or babies, it is always good to have things that can keep them content. A blanket they can hold is nice. For infants, you should have formula and diapers on hand for in times of need. Make sure to keep renewing the formula as formula does go bad.

The last thing that you should always pack with this kit is any life threatening medications like blood pressure or insulin. This way you can make sure that the person who has these issues as are well prepared. Have enough for a few days worth. It can be that long before help comes or you can get to the store to get them if you run out.

When you have these items you can be sure that you are prepared for the worst. Many people laugh it off, but anything could happen. They need to know who you are in these times of need and you have to have the resources to keep yourselves alive.
