Good Listening Skill Is One Of The Traits Of A Successful Person

By Alvin Huang

Developing excellent listening skills can make a big difference in how successful someone can be. It touches every aspect of our lives, and helps us learn and remember things that will help us in life.

Learning to listen means paying attention when someone is talking. Keeping your mind from wandering is one of the key parts of the process, but if you can master the tricks, then you will be astounded at how different your life can be.

Poor listening skills can put you in a bind that may be hard to get out of, especially if you get caught for not paying attention. Most of the time, we tend to drift into daydreaming, which is one of the most common ways we mess up.

Making sure that you never are faced with that situation, focusing your attention and energy in the moment at hand is what it is all about. Keep distractions to a minimum and try to be as attentive as possible. Some common distractions are the television and radio along with the computer.

Listening to what the person has to say before jumping to conclusions is important too. Often we can easily listen to something until we think we get it, but then we don't pay attention to the rest of the conversation. Getting out of that habit will make a big difference.

Not only is that pretty rude behavior, but when we stop paying attention, or worse yet, interrupt the person, we open the door to a lot of misperceptions. Let the person finish talking, even if you think you know what they are telling you.

One way to help stay focused is to keep eye contact with the person speaking. This will help you to stay involved in the conversation without drifting off to daydreaming. You don't have to stare them down, but look at them and try and see their body language as an extension of the conversation.

In fact, there is a good chance that you will get more out of the conversation by watching their expressions and body language then you would just by hearing their voice. So, pay attention and be an active listener and you will remember more.
