Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Rules for the Dojo

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been around for more than 50 years. Since it gained popularity in the early 1990s, more people want to learn it and the best place to do that is in a gym. Before joining a class, here are a few rules you must know when you enter the Dojo.

1. You need to be in proper attire before you step on the mat. This usually consists of the Gi. If you havent bought one yet, you can enter wearing a T-shirt and sweat pants or shorts. Just get one as soon as possible.

2. Even if the dojo is air conditioned, it is going to get hot during class so bring a towel to wipe yourself and have a water bottle with you.

3. The instructor must always be addressed as Sensei. In English, it means the one who has gone before. Outside the dojo, you can call each other on a first name basis. As for other students who are senior, it is safe to call them Sir or Maam.

4. Besides properly addressing those higher than you, bowing must be done once you enter the dojo, before a fight and when you leave the dojo after class. The correct way of doing it is to bend forward with your feet together and with both hands on the front of the thighs. When this is done in front of someone, always maintain eye contact.

5. Everyone will have their chance to spar and when it is not your turn, pay close attention to what the rest are doing. You can take notes if you like so you can review them later. This should also be given to your Sensei as this is one of the components that are graded in order for you to get the next belt.

6. There is also a seating plan in the Dojo. Those who wear the brown belts sit on the left of the instructor while those wearing blue and green on the right. If you are new, you have a white belt and you will be seated in front of the instructor. When signaled, everyone bows to the instructor and he too will do the same.

7. The proper way of sitting during Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class is on your knees with your butt resting on your feet or cross legged. Other positions are considered to be impolite so never make that mistake.

8. If you have to go to the bathroom or leave the class early, inform the instructor first so he or she knows where you are.

9. During a match, the only way to win is to make your opponent tap the mat. When this happens, you have to let them go in the same manner that they will also show the same courtesy to you.

10. Classes start on time so you should be ready by the time it begins. If you are going to be late, call in advance.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu rules are practiced so no one gets seriously hurt. If you dont know what to do, follow what the rest are doing or ask questions.

At no time must you think that because you have to consciously control your breathing that you are not in complete control. Language is a powerful thing. Although you may not know it, the words you use show others how you see the world.

Experts tell us that people not only use language to describe the world they see, but language and the words used actually help to create the world people experience.

How so?

Our subconscious mind loves consistency and so will try to interpret what it experiences in a way consistent with the words we use.

This powerful tool on the tips of our tongues not only affects us, but also affects people listening to us. So you can change the way someone else views the world by consciously choosing certain words to help their subconscious form a world view you desire.

Here's how you do this.

Using language and words the right way, actually allows you to hypnotize someone you speak to. I don't mean a complete hypnotic induction like you see in the movies, where someone lies on a couch. But rather, you can speak directly to their subconscious mind when you use the right words and tone of voice. This gives you the ability to influence people to view things the way you want them to.

In other words you can change the way people behave by saying the right things in the right way.

So what are the "right things to say?

Speaking to the subconscious mind is easier than you'd think. The world renowned hypnotist, Milton Erickson, pioneered a model for conversational hypnosis involving three stages:

Stage 1.

Look for clues that tell you how the person sees the world, or a specific problem you are working on. Pay attention to the language the person uses. How does he describe what he is feeling, seeing, hearing, etc. Once you see the patterns then you can use the persons experiences to gently draw their attention away from the outside world and into their own inner experience.

This can be done with questions like, "How do you feel about this?", or "What was that for you?"

This focusing inward allows them to understand how seeing the world the way they do makes them feel.

Stage 2.

The next stage of the Erickson Model is aimed at distracting the person's conscious mind. Milton Erickson did this by speaking with complex and ambiguous langauge.

He would use words that sounded the same, but had different meanings, like wander/wonder, sale/sail, hear/here, right/write, You get the picture.

Milton deployed double binds to present only the set of options he desired. He'd say things like: We don't know if you'll begin a trance not or in 10 minutes.

This kind of language gives the mind no choice but to fall into a trance, and it uses an embedded command to do so now, or in 5 minutes.

When words are incorrectly used, it confuses and distracts the conscious mind. This causes the conscious mind to look inward, asking for help from the subconscious mine.

Well, that's a couple Milton Model techniques of mind distraction. I really don't know if you would want to learn a lot more about the Milton Model of conversational hypnosis now or later :)

Stage 3.

Once the mind has been distracted, the final step in the Milton Model is to access the subconscious minds resources.

This can be done using a few methods. The most straightforward if by embedding subliminal commands into your sentences as you speak. Since they are subliminal, they will be transparent to the conscious mind, but heard clearly by the subconscious mind.

These are a few examples:

--Who knows if you will certainly wash to dishes right away --You should do it, shouldn't you? --You are going to do this, didn't you? (this sounds like it doesn't make any sense, but your subconscious mind will hear the command)

So you may be asking yourself, self if I just say confusing things to people, or things that have embedded commands in them, then I can get people to do whatever I want them to?!

Well, my answer to that is maybe.

The important point of conversational hypnosis is that you can only make someone do something that does not violate their beliefs and values.

You can definitely speak to someones subconscious mind using the Milton Model techniques, but it takes a lot more than a quick conversation to change someones values.

Practicing the Milton Model, you can become quite good at applying conversational hypnosis to make embedded commands to covertly influence those around you.

Aikido Techniques - Ki Extension: The Power Comes from the Center

In a galaxy far, far away Star Wars introduced us to the concept of the Force, which Obi Wan Kenobi described as an invisible energy field that flows through all living beings. Many Aikido practitioners receive training in Ki development because it is believed that a similar force, called Ki, flows through us in the same way and is the source of power, which originates from the Center or One-point. Key (no pun intended) to understanding this concept includes: The Unbendable Arm and Breathing to generate mental relaxation.

The Unbendable Arm - Among the first questions asked by new Aikido students is "what is this force and how do we know when we have it"? Many have heard the story of an individual generating the strength to free a loved-one trapped underneath a heavy object. We imagine the power of Ki as an untapped reservoir akin to the mass of an iceberg, which lies under the surface of the ocean. One of the first ki training exercises is Orenaite also known as the unbendable arm. Ki flows through the healthy body continuously and can be redirected to focus power in a specific location and direction. To help our students visualize this concept, we ask them to extend one arm straight and to imagine directing an imaginary stream of water from our center, through our head and out the arm in a powerful stream focused on putting our water. What we find is that this relaxed arm can be held straight much more powerfully than trying to consciously hold it straight with muscle power. This imaginary water is our visualization of the flowing ki energy.

Breathing to generate mental relaxation - Ki flow and the power derived from it are only possible when the mind is relaxed, which results in a relaxed body. Since one of the Four Basic Principles of Aikido is Relax Completely, the key (no pun intended) is to train the mind to relax so that the body can follow suit. Many Aikido dojos focus on the technique of Misogi breathing to help the student develop the skills needed to unify the mind and body. The student sits upright either in seiza (the Japanese position with the legs tucked under) or zazen (also known as Indian style), and looks forward and downward with eyes half shut. The focus is exclusively on breathing and how this exercise accomplishes it. Air is drawn in through the nose and is imagined to follow a path through the nostrils, into the head and down into the one-point or center which expands as the breath is taken in. As exhalation begins, the breath retraces its steps and exits the mouth with an "ahhhh" sound. During this time the one-point or center is imagined to contract to an infinitesimally small size. It is through the absolute focus on breathing that the worldly thoughts are shut out of consciousness. The mind can then relax and as it does the body relaxes. From the Four Basic Principles of Aikido we know that when the body is Relaxed Completely, that the other three components including Extend Ki are present. When the mind and body are unified and relaxed, Ki flows freely and the power generated by specific Aikido movements is maximized. It is through exercises like Misogi breathing that the mind is freed from extraneous thoughts and is permitted to fully relax, which allowing the student to think with a great deal more clarity.

When one observes someone who has internalized the principles of Aikido, he see an individual whose movements are relaxed and flowing. The mind that is calm relaxes the body and permits weight to naturally settle on the underside and allows the center to become the solid focal point of the technique. This relaxed mind "sees" everything from the potential threats to openings or opportunities. Finally, the relaxed mind and body are unified, which permits optimal, unrestricted ki flow and resultant power it generates.

Like the Force of Star Wars, Ki energy can be neither seen nor touched. It flows through our bodies and is the massive part of the iceberg, which lies just below the surface. Energy originates in and flows from the one-point or center. Instructional tools such as the unbendable arm can help illustrate this invisible source of energy and techniques such as Misogi breathing can help the student relax the mind to permit maximum flow of Ki energy.
