How to Slow Walk Part One

The first time I made time stretch I was jerked out of a sleep by a commotion outside my yard. I saw a couple of fellows trying to beat my dog when I looked down from the upstairs window. I yelled down at them to leave my dog alone, and they yelled something back at me, and the next thing you know I was careening through the house while pulling on my pants.

I took in the scene at a glance as I came out of the gate. My dog bouncing around, and the two fellows trying to get him while he danced around a frightened young girl holding a small dog, and I knew what had happened. My dog had jumped the fence when he had seen the little girls dog, and she had picked her dog up to protect it, and my dog had jumped around and barked at her, and the two fellows were really just coming to the rescue of a small girl.

This thing had turned into a problem for me. The two guys werent bad. How could I turn things around without hurting anybody?

I began walking slow, real slow, and the fellows suddenly started to worry. They were bigger than me, but my eyes were on them, and confident, and they suddenly had time for worry to foment and build within their minds. They began to sweat and perspire and even shake.

My dog suddenly stopped dancing around and sat down and looked at me, everything in the whole darned world had gone into slow motion, and I slowed my walk even more. The little girl, looked up at me, she was still holding her dog. Calmly, I asked what was going on.

It was beautiful. You could see the relief in the two fellows eyes that things hadnt escalated into physical fighting, and they both began to babble. Each wanted to be the one to explain what had happened.

I finally looked down at my dog, who was looking up with a rather guilty expression, and they stopped their babbling. So, knucklehead, it was you, eh? He flopped his tail on the ground a few times as he looked down.

The dog was renowned for ignoring me, but when I told the dog to get into the yard, miracle of miracles, he slunk through the gate. I looked around, and nobody seemed to be hurt. I petted the girls dog, smiled at the two guys, and left, and that was the first time I ever slow walked.

The Way To Choose Your Omega 3 Capsules

It's confusing isn't it. DHA, EPA and more. How do you choose your Omega 3 supplements?

You know what it's like. The more you read the worse it gets. You start learning about EPA and DHA, and long chain and short chain omega 3 fats. About ALA and converting ALA to DHA.

For example a reader recently asked me about how to choose his omega 3 fish oil capsules. He was confused about the difference between long chain and short chain Omega 3 fats, and confused about which were the best Omega 3 supplements.

I can understand how he got confused, so here's a little more about it and some ideas on how to choose the best Omega 3 fish oil supplements.

The three Omega 3 fats weve mentioned (DHA, EPA and ALA) are polyunsaturated fats. They are all good for your body but by far the best and most important is DHA. Remember DHA is the fat that makes up a large part of your brain, though of course that isnt the only reason.

You get ALA from plant sources like flax seeds, and your DHA comes from sources like deep sea fish. And DHA is a long chain fatty acid, whilst ALA is a short chain fatty acid. But the most important is DHA.

But DHA, the most important Omega 3 fatty acid along with EPA, is what you need from your Omega 3 supplements. And all Omega 3 fish oil capsules contain DHA.

All fish oil supplements have DHA.

So if you're better using fish oil supplements are they all the same? If not how do you choose between the different fish oil supplements?

There are two factors in choosing the best fish oil supplements. You need to consider the quantity of DHA you get in each capsule and you need to look at the purity of the fish oil. That's all.

To decide which are the best value fish oil capsules you must consider how much DHA are in them, not just the price.

Supplements with a third of the amount of DHA than other supplements are not good value even if they are half the price, because on a price/DHA quantity comparison they are actually more expensive.

And don't stop there because you need to find out which are the purest oils used in the supplements because, sadly, most of our fish can be contaminated with toxins. You don't want to be taking capsules with fish oil that may be contaminated with mercury, for example.

That's the process of choosing your Omega 3 supplements. There's only 2 things to consider, so forget long and short chain fats and so on.

It isn't easy to do that comparison though. I have spent some time doing it and the good news is that there is a brand of Omega3 capsules that do offer good value on DHA quantity as well as the highest purity in the industry.

The Right Ways To Lose Belly Fat

I get asked often what is the best way to burn fat and build muscle. A lot of people want to know if aerobics exercise is the only way to go than doing strength training, or if the common exercises that involve cardio does more than interval training.

Having a little more than 15 years of experience within the field of fitness, training myself and teaching others right from wrong I am sure I have the knowledge of what actually works and what dont.

First, I want to make sure my responses are understood. I'm going to tell you what works for people that have a limited amount of time to get there exercise in, I expect you readers do not have 90 minutes per day to exercise. Now days there is not enough time in the day to get what you want done. That's also why there is a big disconnection between the information provided in fitness magazines to the readers who cant apply the info found in magazines because of the time deficiency.

Not enough time is available to workout 6-8 hours a week. Think about it, unless you are a tri athlete you actually need it. If you are someone that just wants to get rid of fat and build muscle you just need a system.

The way to acquire a fit body is to do bodyweight exercises to warm up, after that start strength training supersets to pack on muscle and then complete your workout with interval training to lose fat quickly.

Turbulence Training is a program that does that. Turbulence Trainings system was made to have you finished with your workouts in just 45 minutes, three times a week. Doing a full workout in the shortest amount of time gets the most out of your workout burning more calories. First a 5 minute bodyweight exercise will be your warm up. This alone is way more effective than trying to warm up on the treadmill, which all that really does is get you ready for more walking on the treadmill.

Then it will move you into the strength training supersets. You use two exercises performed back to back with minimum rest between each one. This dramatically cuts your workout time, while receiving maximum results. All you need is 20 minutes for this, we will use basic exercises and sometimes more bodyweight exercises depending on the clients goal for building muscle.

Finally 18 minutes of interval training. A warm up followed by six short intervals that is right for the client. Then a short, low intensity recovery. Finish it with a nice cool down and that's the workout. Only 45 minutes long, three times a week.

Why Tai Chi is the Deadliest Art

On the list of deadly arts Tai Chi Chuan is probably the most overlooked. Oh, people do that for health, or when they are old, or any other number of reasons. Yet, the truth of the matter, after studying a wide variety of arts for over forty years, I'm convinced that Tai Chi has the most potential in a fight.

The first thing one should know is that Tai Chi does not make powerful the body. What it does is make powerful the space of the body. When you do one of those slow postures you are feeding awareness into the body, and, eventually, you reach the conclusion that all that meat and bone and stuff is merely a space within the universe.

And how, exactly, one might ask, do you hit somebody with space? Actually, if you aren't stuck in the notion that the body is a bunch of meat, it is easier to hit with space than with a body. It is far easier to move the space than it is to move the idea of objects within space.

You aren't sending a message through the nerves to move a muscle to move a mass of bone and meat to collide with a chin somewhere over there. Instead, you are outside the space, almost puffing on it with your desire. And the space of you, without being locked into any of the mechanical pieces, moves quickly and efficiently to collide.

The fact of the matter is that hitting, or striking, is colliding, and colliding is vastly inefficient when it comes to matters of combat. When you understand that the body is space, striking is usually not the weapon of choice because you have so many other weapons to choose from. Indeed, a good Tai Chi-ist rarely decides to collide.

When you harmonize the spaces involved in a combat, and unbalance those spaces, that is a lot more fun. It is much more fun than bashing your fisty bone upon the dull of his noggin. The trick is to adjust the relativity and trajectory of the spaces of the bodies so that so that the incoming missile slides on past and no more missiles can be launched.

If he draws hand back, his space retracts, which is a direction, which can be wafted away with a puff of intention. If he pushes, his space expands, which is a direction, which can be sucked past with a twist and a puff of intention. Indeed, the poor fellow, stuck on the plane of two feet, has no possible defense or attack against something which isn't there, which is what the definition of space is.

To strike is a decision that is manifest through bone and meat. Space, however, is a perception unhindered by meat, so the decisions made of space are ten times faster than decisions made of meat. The really, funny thing about all this is when you realize that your body is space, it can't be destroyed, for how can somebody destroy nothing?

What Are The Heart Benefits Of Fish Oil Supplements?

This particular study studied the heart benefits of fish oil supplements and it looked at the benefits to the heart of fish oil supplements high in DHA and EPA, the two major Omega 3 fats.

There were 36 pro football players who took part and they took either omega 3 fish oil supplements or else a placebo. The fish oil capsules they took contained 2560 mg of omega-3 fatty acids (650 mg EPA and 450 mg DHA in each capsule.)

The study, or it's results, backed up the conclusions of so many other studies that supported the health benefits of Omega 3 fish oil supplementation that increased the levels of essential fatty acids in the diet.

The football players had an improvement in their HDL levels (their good cholesterol) and a reduction in their LDL levels (their bad cholesterol).

And triglycerides went down too, an excellent result.

And this isn't the first time a study has found that there are significant heart benefits to taking fish oil supplements. There are now many studies backing up the health benefits of fish oil supplementation.

And the AHA (American Heart Association) now recommends at least 2 gram a day intake of EPA and DHA, the 2 most important Omega 3 fats, more for those with high triglycerides.

So now that you know how important taking sufficient Omega 3 fats in your diet is, how do you increase your intake? By using the very best Omega 3 fish oil supplements.

Cod Liver Oil Versus Omega 3 Fish Oil.

It may have been your grandmother who first told you about cod liver oil benefits. For a long time it has been accepted wisdom that cod liver oil is good for you.

So is it really true that there are benefits to taking cod liver oil or is it just a myth, and are there risks to cod liver oil supplementation?

Yes in fact your grandmother wasn't wrong, there really are benefits to taking cod liver oil, and science has now confirmed it.

The main benefits of cod liver oil are from the Omega 3 fats that are found in it. And you are probably very aware now that there are a wide range of health benefits to taking more Omega 3 fats into your diet.

And there's vitamins too like vitamins D and A. Vitamin D has a role in helping prevent osteoporosis, as it helps process calcium.

Omega3 Fatty Acids. Should You Eat Fish To Get Them?

It's a good question isn't it. Fish is contaminated with mercury, so should we be eating fish to get those good omega3 fatty acids in our diets?

And if eating fish is a bad idea because of the mercury, how else do you get that Omega3 in your diet?

And you don't want to be getting mercury in your body do you? It's not something that your body gets rid of, and it's not good for children in particular.

But notwithstanding, the EPA doesn't tell us to remove fish from our diet. Fish is ok in small quantities and they do offer some guidelines for how much, and what type, you should eat.

Its ok to eat around 2 serves of fish a week. However for children or pregnant women theres some more things to think about, because mercury is more of a risk to children or developing fetuses.

Pregnant women and children ought not eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel, or tilefish. These types of fish are higher in mercury.

But you can eat fish,in small amounts, you don't need to eliminate it from your diet.

But there's another problem before we conclude that we all ought to be eating fish for our Omega3 fatty acids. Fish is scarce and getting scarcer. Have you seen the price of fish lately? It's really expensive.

And it's ok to eat it in small quantities, but if you're just eating it for those good fats there are better ways. Of course if you love eating fish then no problem. Eat it.

And although it's small amounts, there is still mercury in fish. So if you can find a way of getting your Omega3 fats that isn't so expensive, and doesn't have mercury, that's got to be a better way.

Use fish oil supplements. You can get Omega3 fatty acid supplements. They contain fish oil, and they are extremely clean, sourcing their oil from fish that live in the cleanest ocean in the world, the southern ocean, and then this is put through a molecular distillation process until contaminants are undetectable.

But there are no enforced standards for fish oil contamination levels. and not all fish oil supplements are totally clean. Be careful.

So if you're just eating fish for it's Omega3 fatty acids, don't bother. There's cheaper ways that allow you to take your Omega3 fats daily, without the mercury. But if you just love to eat fish then go for it.

The War of the Martial Arts!

At the heart of the matter is the fact that the universe is a dichotomy. Dichotomy merely means that there are two sides to a thing. Right and left, up and down, and so on into the abstract realm of ideas.

The Martial Arts, of course, represent war versus peace. And, in studying the martial arts, one finds all sorts of other dichotomies. Dichotomies which strike right to the heart and soul of the practice, and even question our right to existence.

The newbie signs up for a course of instruction and is, in a very short while, consumed by the dichotomy of freestyle v form. Does he elect to study techniques designed for the battlefield and death and destruction, or does he study the abstract perfectionism of forms?

Behind this simple dichotomy is the question of control v destruction. Does the student practice techniques of control, which are more difficult to work on the street, or does he practice techniques of destruction, which are quick and easy to learn, but perhaps not in keeping with the philosophy of the human soul. The answer will dictate which way he goes, and what kind of a human being he will end up being.

Then there is sport v art. Should he practice the martial arts for the abstract of art, and be willing to wait perhaps decades for its benefits, or should he practice the martial arts for athleticism and a strong body, and then risk that body in contest? Again, the answer will dictate the very worth of his life, and his direction as a human being.

Really, we are talking mind v matter. Is the body the container of the spirit, or is man an animal? Should he study in hopes of living a wild and exciting journey, and that is the point of it all, or should he study to illuminate the spirit within, and that is the point of it all?

Really, in answering these simple questions, man is deciding his fate. He is choosing to go up or down, and this in a murky fog with no sense of direction. For what is the worth of the human soul, and who is to tell us of the right and wrong inherent within ourselves...but ourselves?

Betides. We choose, wrong or right, we choose. Whether we choose right or wrong, our uniqueness is put up to the light, and it is a choice to be valued.

Position Yourself for Success

In the spring of 1940, Winston Churchill was asked to lead Great Britain in its defense against Germany. Few could argue that Churchill was the right person for the job.

He later wrote, "I felt as if I were walking with destiny, and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and for this trial." The new Prime Minister became one of the greatest statesmen in world history. He helped England successfully resist and (with the help of the U.S.) eventually defeat the Nazi war machine.

He was prepared for leadership.

We don't have control over what happens to us. We do have a great deal of control over how we prepare ourselves and position ourselves for reaching our goals.

There may be times in our lives when the path ahead is unclear-when we're not quite sure of which direction we should choose. If this is the case, we can always prepare for that time when we are clear and we do know exactly what to do. This can be a valuable time of preparation. And it can pay big dividends. Oftentimes, merely the process of preparation-the activity itself-will provide clarity and certainty as to our plans.

I recommend you use the following checklist to improve your personal positioning. How do you rate in each area? What can you do to enhance your preparedness?

1. Health and Vitality. You can't have get-up-and-go if you don't have a reserve of energy and good health. We must take care of ourselves in order to have the drive and strength to go after our dreams. You know what to do. It's common sense. Eat right, get adequate rest, and take good care of your body. It's the only one you get.

2. Education and Skills. What you know and what you can do in terms of skills is a big part of your positioning. What skills do you need to work on? What do you need to learn? Take some classes. Do some research. Read. Make a commitment to a life-long search for knowledge and upgrading your skills. It will not only increase your preparation quotient, but it will keep you feeling stimulated-even young.

3. Contacts. The people you know and the relationships you've developed over the years can be a virtual gold mine to you. It's imperative you cultivate and build your associations in order to obtain help and round up talent for your projects.

4. Self-Image and Self-Esteem. How you feel about yourself comes across to others. It can't be faked. You increase your self-esteem by doing the right thing-always. You improve your confidence by doing what you say you'll do-whether you say it to yourself or to others. Every time we lie, we chip away at our self-image.

There is no status quo. We either build or tear down our self-esteem. Integrity is the essence of everything successful.

5. Finances and Credit. Most opportunities involve an investment of money as well as time and energy. Having money in the bank and good credit on which to borrow can go a long way toward tipping the scales in your favor. In the world of business, "cash is king." Pay off those debts and create some savings (if you haven't already) and get ready.

6. Attitude. People with good attitudes not only get more done, they attract opportunity and people who can help them.

Are you someone people like to be around? Would you consider your attitude to be one of your strongest assets? Regardless of your answer, you can improve your attitude and along with it, your success.

Read good books. Listen to good tapes. Stay around positive people. Study people you think have good attitudes and emulate that part of them.

It's not easy, I know. As Coach Bear Bryant said, "It's not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.

The True Story Of The Ali/Inoki Fight

While mixed martial arts fighting has only recently become popular in the United States, contests between fighters of different martial arts disciplines have taken place in Japan for many years. They weren't called "mixed martial arts" until recently, but they were definitely an embryonic form of the now booming sport. Many of the most famous events of this type took place in Japan during the 1970's involving pro wrestling legend Antonio Inoki.

Inoki would often face other martial artists in fights that are widely accepted to have been "worked" (having a predetermined outcome) in the same manner as professional wrestling matches. While Inoki faced a number of karate, judo and boxing champions his most famous match was certainly his fight against world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

There are differing accounts of how the best heavyweight boxer in history found himself in a ring in Tokyo's Budokan Arena against a pro wrestler. One thing is certain--it was viewed as an easy payday for Ali, who'd lost a good chunk of his prime earning years to his controversial stance over the Vietnam war. That's what got him there in the first place, and that's what kept him there after the two sides began squabbling over the rules and the outcome of the fight. Some suggest that it was supposed to be a "fair fight" going in and once Ali saw Inoki spar he insisted on rules changes to tilt the fight in his favor. Another more likely version of the story suggests that Ali's handlers knew that the fight was supposed to be a "work" all along. They made the deal with Inoki's people based on this fact, and were all on board as to the outcome of the match and how it would "finish". The "original" plan was to have Inoki win in a controversial manner that would keep his undefeated streak in "MMA" matches intact while allowing Ali to "save face. The only person who wasn't aware of the game plan, however, was Ali himself. When informed that he was supposed to "take a dive", even in a convoluted fashion, Ali refused. No agreement was reached between the two camps and at the last minute a legit fight transpired. The promoters were left with a sold out Budokan, a worldwide PPV audience and two fighters who despite every effort to the contrary would actually have to fight each other.

The rules that were in place on fight night were so ridiculously one sided in favor of Ali that it almost defies belief. Inoki wasn't allowed to hit Ali with a closed fist, nor strike him in the head at all. He was also prohibited from using any sort of choke or submission maneuver. Most problematically, he was prohibited from trying to take Ali to the ground. In other words, Inoki was basically not permitted to do anything that would threaten Ali with any sort of physical harm.

The result was an absolutely horrible fight. Neither man showed much interest in engaging the other, with Inoki spending most of the time on the ground doing what he could under the one sided rules. Inoki threw kicks at Ali's legs, Ali threw an occasional jab and tried to protect himself from his opponent's leg strikes. The fight ended a 74-74 draw, with the real losers being the fans.

An interesting postscript to the fight is that the referee was former pro wrestler "Judo" Gene Labell, a legit tough guy whom some have suggested could have beaten up both Ali and Inoki at the same time despite his advanced age. Had he chosen to do so, it would certainly have been welcomed by those watching the fight live and on closed circuit.

The fiasco didn't hurt Inoki's popularity in Japan whatsoever. Oddly, he became something of a hero for trying to take the fight to Ali despite the one sided rules. He would remain one of Japan's most popular pro wrestlers and later serve in the country's parliament. Inoki's fights against other martial artists remained wildly popular, and are often credited as being the forerunner of PRIDE, RINGS and the major MMA organizations in Japan today.

The Secret of Pa Kua

Do enough Pa Kua Chang and something really weird happens. Pa Kua, as many people know, is that martial art where you walk in a circle endlessly. Circles where you find loops within spirals within circles.

Let me explain a couple of things first, before I tell you about this weird thing in Pa Kua Chang. Understand what I tell you and you will have an easier time understanding that weird is normal in this universe, and normal is weird. Sound good?

There are eight steps from the beginning to the end in the Pa Kua circle. This is a good sweep with one leg, or about six feet in diameter. And, of course, the beginning of the circle is the end, and the end of the circle is the beginning.

Classical Pa Kua-ists claim that if you put the palms in various positions as you walk the circle, that the positions stand for various phenomena. Lightening palms, thunder palms, palms, fire palms, water palms, and so on. By creating this analogy they have created an entire and separate universe. There hasn't been a good explanation for what is happening, up till now, but this universe can occupy a student for a lifetime.

You must understand that the body is a machine when you create this Pa Kua universe. Power goes down the legs and up the legs, just like alternating current. You should know, and confirm it with a good dictionary, that power is energy, and energy is the capacity for work, and the capacity for work is how much you can lift.

The tan tien creates the energy of the body. The tan tien is a located a couple of inches below the navel. The tan tien creates energy which goes down and up and the legs and back into the tan tien.

What happens is that the body becomes a capacitor, a storage device, and the energy can be stored for later use. But also, and most interesting, is that after walking the circle sufficient with the idea I've detailed here, you will experience actual lightening going up and down your legs. You will also, as you explore the potential of the palms in conjunction with the storing of the energy, experience a barber pole type energy swirl up and down your arms.

The point here is that Pa Kua is not mystical, but it does take a calm mind and a dedicated practitioner to experience what I have explained here. One must walk the circle enough times, and tell the body enough times and with enough sincerity, for the body to start acting as a capacitor. It is possible, however, and easier as one comes to believe that this universe is not a trap, but a transit.

Time is a liquid that can be manipulated at will. At first glance, it is a measuring stick, measuring the universe. The truth, however, is that a little martial arts training can bend this ruler at will.

Understanding time merely requires a little presence of mind. This understanding can be applied to the martial arts easily, and does result in the required presence of mind. There are four easily defined steps, or stages, to this theory.

The first step is to see/think/react. The beginner sees a threat, thinks about it, finally reacts. This would be the block and counter stage.

The second step is to see/react. Through practice, the student eliminates having to think about a technique and goes from seeing a threat to reacting to it. A student is getting faster at this stage of timing, and he is usually able to block and counter with the same hand.

The third step is when the student reacts. The student is actually starting to have a sixth sense when a threat is about and whirls to meet it, he is becoming more polished, and he doesn't even need to see a threat to react. This step would be labeled as the simultaneous block and counter stage.

The fourth step is act. A student perceives a threat developing and moves before it can result in a raised fist or launched foot. Simply, the person has eliminated rea-, which is reaction time, and is moving in the moment.

Mind of no mind is the meaning of the Japanese term Mushin no shin, and it means that a person is moving in the moment. A person is an actual master of the world at this stage, able to see things before they happen, and act accordingly, and he is not a victim of the world, only capable of reacting to a threat. Personal choice is immense and developing at this a stage.

The world is measured by time, but time is a perception of the world. If you train your perceptions, you can train yourself to handle the world. This is just one of the many blessings of a course of study in the martial arts.

The Terrible Beginnings of Ed Parker

There are many less than honorable stories in the martial arts. The one I heard about Kenpo Karate and Ed Parker is one of the worst I have ever heard, however. Perhaps, if anybody knows the truth or falsity of this tale, they could let me know.

Ed Parker is credited with being the founder of modern Kenpo, teaching movie stars, including Elvis, putting on the biggest tournament in the world for years, the Internationals, and all manner of other deeds. His students are legion, and his prowess is quite well known. Unfortunately, he was only a brown belt when he first began teaching.

In those days he was actually teaching the Heian forms from Shotokan karate, this as illustrated by one of his earliest books. Running out of material to teach his students, he returned to Hawaii and was told to go take a hike, the founder of the system apparently had lost interest in him as a student. I'm not sure, exactly, what the fall out was, but it was perhaps that Ed was teaching without permission.

Ed then ran into a fellow named Jimmy Wu, whose named might have been Jimmy Woo, who knew authentic and tremendous gung fu, but who was sadly deficient when it came to speaking English. Ed brought Jimmy to Los Angeles, put him up in his house while Jimmy created the techniques and forms of Kenpo. Ed began teaching these forms and techniques as his own.

During this time, Ed asked Jimmy to write a book with him on this new art, and Jimmy spent his days writing a book on Kenpo, teaching Ed and some of his students, all while still being lacking in the English language department. One day Jimmy saw a rough draft/translation of the book that Ed was planning on sending to an agent, and he was surprised to see that his name was not even mentioned in the book. This was surprising, because even though he was partners with Ed, Jimmy was doing all the work.

Why not my name on book, he is supposed to have asked. Ed said he would tell him all about it, but could they take a drive, Ed had an errand to run, and he would explain on the way. Ed drove Jimmy into Hollywood, but Ed didn't say a word about the book the whole time. On Hollywood Boulevard Ed let Jimmy out of the car, and drove away.

Jimmy had only the clothes on his back and a single quarter in his pocket. With that last quarter he called one of Ed's students. In his bad English he explained that he didn't know where he was, or why it had all happened, but that Ed had driven off and left him.

He had been teaching, writing, and suddenly, he had been betrayed. Now, is this story true, or is it a pack of lies? If anybody has definite facts, I sure would like to know.
