Josie and the City

By Nui Kahuna

Bill always worried about his daughter, Josie. She always had that independent streak growing up. The past Thanksgiving, she announced to the family that she would be moving to the big city to work on her acting career.

When Josie's sister wondered aloud if Josie would keep up her workout routine, Josie assured everyone that she'd still get her three mile walk in every day by strolling through the park. It didn't take long for sparks to fly across the dinner table.

Surely, Bill was surprised at Josies unexpected announcement, but he felt that he needed to support his daughter as well. And so, before his dear daughter's departure to the big city, he managed to get Josie a big Christmas present.

On the next family gathering, Bill made a touching speech to Josie. It was when he apologized for all his shortcomings.

"I know, Dad," said Josie, "the city's a lot different than this town, and you just want me to be safe."

Bill continued. Although he had been sceptical with Josie's abrupt decision, he told her that perhaps he could do something that would make the both of them feel better with her move.

His Christmas gift for Josie was a pair of Hot Walkers, which could be disguised as a regular pair of aerobic hand weights - the perfect accessory for Josie's workout program.

"But these weights keep you alive in another way," Bill explained. "Let's say you run into someone who wants to hurt you. Just press this button right here to blast them with pepper spray. They won't be able to do much of anything for a while, so you can run and get help."

Bill also shared his concerns with Josie. He said, "This lets you stay in control, and it'll keep me and your sister from worrying about you on those walks."

Josie sure was thankful to have a dad like Bill around. Soon enough, everyone in the family was in for a warm celebration.

Knowing the Symptoms of Heart Disease can Save Your Life!

By Allie Hart

You can't always recognize symptoms of common heart problems. Some things you might think are related to your heart are not really problems. Other symptoms may indicate serious coronary heart disease and need immediate attention. You need to be able to distinguish between the two.

Always discuss what you feel may be symptoms of heart disease with your doctor. You might not have one of any number of common heart problems, but if you are not sure, check it out before you end up with a heart attack. Let your doctor tell you if your symptoms are serious.

Here are some common symptoms: Feeling exhausted without apparent reason -- not being able to do a full day's work or even finish simple chores. You might have a loss of appetite, or even nausea with a bloated stomach feeling. Finding breathing labored or difficult without exertion is another sign. All of these should be reported to your doctor.

Some of the more common danger signs of heart problems are: heart palpitations, a racing heart rate of over 100 beats per minute, and/or chest discomfort or pain. If resting eases any or all of these symptoms, you might have heart disease.

If you are having any of these symptoms, or particularly if you are having multiple symptoms, you should call your doctor immediately. This is even more crucial if you are in a high risk category: smokers, excessive drinkers, substance abusers, or individuals with a genetic background of heart disease are all in a higher risk group. If you cannot reach your doctor, you should have a family member or friend drive you to the emergency room.

Call 911 or if you must, have someone take you to the hospital without any delay if you have an excruciating chest pain accompanied by shortness of breath, sudden weakness or profuse sweating. If you experience a severe shortness of breath along with an accelerated heart rate, you should also seek immediate medical attention. Weakness or loss of the ability to move, sudden excruciating headache, fainting or loss of consciousness are all symptoms requiring prompt treatment.

If you are concerned about your symptoms, but don't feel like you are in immediate danger, at least call your doctor. On the other hand, if you are having the severe symptoms and you are becoming afraid - call 911 or get an immediate ride to the emergency room. Do not wait to see if the symptoms subside on their own. Time is of the essence!

Battle Snow with the Latest Shovel

By Douglas Cordell

There are a lot of places in the United States that experience snowfall. The first snowfall of the year is something most people wait for as it's a sure sign of the coming Christmas season. Kids will start spending more time outdoors, as they build snowmen, snow angle and fling snowballs at passing people.

Unfortunately, we adults see the impending problems associated with snowfall. When it all accumulates, we know that the task of shoveling the snow away is inevitable; the duties of everyday life don't stop with snowfall after all. And we will of course need to clear our lawns so that we are not hassled by the snow.

Because of this, people find different ways to try and get rid of their surroundings of piled up snow. The most basic, of course, is the snow shovel, but what follows after a session of shoveling is intense physical back pains and aches. While it beats going to the gym, you have to remember that not everyone is equipped with muscle.

One more option people consider is the pricey tractor blades that are made specifically for clearing snow. This is a viable option when you already have the tractor to begin with, but even if you do, it will still take up a chunk of your funds. I will suggest this only if you have a bit of disposable income.

I will, instead, like to point out the latest innovation in the struggle against piled up snow. Let me show you the best snow shovel in the market. It still resembles the generic snow shovel, but with a bit of difference and an add-on, it makes it immensely easier and faster to use. As such, it is a much more desirable choice among the numerous others.

See the new and improved snow shovel, and discover for yourself how clearing your lawn and driveway of all the snow that has piled up on it!

How Eating Affects your Workout Routine

By Vinnce McCann

Exercise is vital in achieving good health. However, apart from the physical activity, eating is as important as well in order to sustain our body with the energy that it needs in keeping up with our daily activities. To maximize the benefits of our exercise, what we eat prior and after every workout is very important.

Whether you are planning on a resistance workout or a cardio exercise, it is very important that keep a balance mix of carbs and protein in your diet. The amount of carbs and protein that you need to take in will have depend on the type of exercise that wish to take on and the intensity that you plan to work at.

The best time for you to eat your pre workout meal is an hour prior to the exercise. If you're thinking of working out on a low intensity, take a 200-calorie meal. However, if you are planning of a high-intensity exercise, a meal with a calorie content between 4,000 to 5,000 would be ideal.

If you are to do a cardio workout, you will need to consume 1/3 protein and 2/3 carbs. The extra carbs will give you enough energy to sustain your whole exercise while the protein content will make sure that your muscles are in the right condition throughout the activity.

A resistance work out on the other hand, will need a mixture of 2/3 protein and 1/3 carbs. The carbs will give you ample energy to help you through every set that you do while the protein will prevent your muscles from breaking down.

Your post work out meal is as important as your pre work out meal. Regardless of the type of exercise that you do, you will deplete energy in the form of glycogen. Our brain and central nervous system rely on glycogen as a main source of fuel and so it is very necessary that you replace the lost glycogen after your exercise. Otherwise, your body will break down muscle tissues into amino acids and convert them to usable fuel for your central nervous system and the brain.

During exercise workout, you will break down muscle tissue by producing micro tears. After you perform a strenuous physical activity, your muscles automatically get into "repair mode" and so you will need ample amount of protein to aid your body's muscle repair. This will prevent your muscles from breaking down further to create fuel in lieu to lost glycogen.

After you finish your cardio exercise, it is ideal that you consume a big amount of carbs preferably those with high fiber content. You can eat oatmeal, rice, whole wheat, pasta or northern fruits for best results. Consume around 30-50 grams of carbs after every exercise. You can eat 5-10 minutes after your cardio workout.

The same thing goes after you finish with a resistance workout. You need to consume a good combination of protein and carbs. The only difference it makes from cardio exercise is that resistance activities break down muscle tissues by creating micro tears.

To repair and build up these tears, you will need protein so that your muscles increase in strength and size. Carbohydrates will not only replace of your lost muscle glycogen, it will also help the protein get through muscle cells allowing it to synthesize into structural protein.

After you finish your resistance exercise, wait for 30 minutes before you start eating. This is important so that you do not take blood away from your muscles. Your blood will play a vital role in the repair process by removing metabolic waste products.

Sean Taylor's Murder

By Nui Kahuna

The cause of my abdominal pain was quite hard to figure out, even for the assigned medical team, which was composed of several doctors, nurses and technicians. It was like an endless scenario - I was directed from one room to another, and I must have tried every diagnostic machine there was.

Actually it was in a wheelchair with a sheet to protect me from the arctic drafts blasting through the halls. On one of my sojourns I was pushed for miles by a 91 year old volunteer named Bill, who logs three days a week at the hospital and a lot of wear and tear on his Keds. I thought at one point that the journey from nuclear medicine back to the heart unit was going to do him in, but like a good sled dog he picked up once he got rolling.

I should have made a sign that said "Do not fold, bend, spindle, or mutilate!" but it probably wouldn't have made a damn worth of difference today, because every hour I was being whisked to someplace where my body became data for some insatiable beast. This is modern medicine, or the process of elimination. So far, we have determined two things.

1. My heart is beating too fast.

Second, theres no definite answer on what caused the pain.

Perhaps every personnel in the hospital knew of my situation, and I guess I'm was in a situation that required some extra medical attention. Temporary relief for heart ailments is readily available, but doctors couldn't just give me some if they weren't even sure of what had caused the pain.

I guess it only tells me one thing.

I should be up to more tests, and I don't think they will ever give up the diagnoses. They should be able to figure out the problem within my stomach.

Like what I predicted, I was then sent to undergo lots of diagnostics.

The whole process reminds me of my idea of biology when I was young. By then, I loved the sight of dissected animals, and I didn't let the chance pass when a friend invited me to take a look at their school's medical laboratory room. That was when I had the chance to see more of those dissected bodies. Although I had the chance to get a glimpse of the dissected bodies, the thought of my body being dissected didn't occur to me, not until this very day.

Yesterday, I watched the chambers of my heart, and I guess they're working pretty fine, except for the upper chamber. A few hours ago, I even saw my liver, gall bladder, and other organs in action.

The movie Star Trek wasnt just any sci-fi movie at all. It's fast becoming a reality.

In fact, some have already relied on the kinds of technology mankind has never dreamed before.

By the way, I would also like to mention the death of the Sean Taylor, who had been famous in the world of Football. He was shot in his home in Miami, just two nights ago.

Sean Taylor, based on some of the video clips featured on TV several days ago, looked young and athletic. When I saw him, he played like a warrior, and he could easily brush off opponents on the way. I could tell that his opponents feared him, because by the looks of it, anyone who could have been brushed off by Sean that violently must have felt it for days.

Mooks invaded his home in the middle of the night, and shot him in the leg, where his femoral artery was severely damaged. He did not recover, even after seven hours of surgery.

Sean's home could not even be considered any average home. His home was a compound, but mooks gained easy access because there were no burglar alarms or dogs ready for intruders like them. Sean didn't even have a gun with him, and there was no other weapon that could have saved him from the situation he was in.

And so, it would be wise to consider the security issues for your home.

Sean Taylor, although a tough warrior in the football field, was at huge disadvantage when the mooks intruded his home.

Choosing the Best Home Security System

By Jen Brister

Every homeowner knows that home security is a top priority for the family. Having a great home security system and a proper emergency plan will help your family to feel secure, no matter what neighborhood you live in. Prevention is the key to keeping your family and your home safe.

Owning a home is part of the American Dream. Having your home broken into, however, shatters that dream and leaves you feeling uncomfortable and insecure. Home owners have a responsibility to their families to take precautions to prevent break ins. A home with a home security system is three times less likely to be robbed than a home without a system.

There are many, many choices available when choosing a home alarm security system. Talk with your family about which kind is the best for your home and budget. It is always best to have your home security system installed before you even move into your new home.

Some home security options include:

Fences

video surveillance equipments

Window alarms

Deadbolt locks

Double lock

motion sensors

Home alarm security systems

driveway alarms

A Guard Dog

Guns are considered an important part of home security system.

Home security systems have dropped in cost over the last few years, making them available to anyone who owns a home. The average homeowner should be able to purchase a home alarm security system that makes them feel comfortable and safe, but does not break the budget.

Besides having a properly installed home security system, there are other ways to feel safer at home. Trim back all shrubbery and branches so that you have a clear view of anyone who is approaching your home. Dont forget to actually lock your deadbolts when you leave the house and during the night.

Even though most homeowners are able to purchase a security system, some still find that it is not in their budget. A great alternative in this case is to purchase several motion sensor lights. They can be found at almost any department store and are usually under $20.00. You should install one at each door of your home and one at the entrance of your driveway.

Before purchasing any type of home alarm system, check online for user reviews. Read what other home owners are saying and take into account their opinions before you make your purchase.

Mixed Martial Arts For All Ages

By Rab Saris

Everybody was Kung-Fu fighting, and now mixed martial arts (MMA) is growing in popularity. But I feel like singing Carl Douglas's line "In fact it was a little bit frightening." Has MMA fighting gone too far? Should we sit and watch it on TV? Should kids be involved?

The deaths of Douglas Dedge in MMA competition or Sammy Vasquez from an MMA sanctioned fight, answer the question of MMA going too far as a spectator sport. The sight of Royce Gracie using his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to lay his opponents on their backs and pound their faces, just does not strike me as good sportsmanship.

This is like a nightmare where every boxer has the personality of Mike Tyson. I suppose if you put mixed martial arts gloves on Tyson he would fit right in.

The place for MMA fighting is where it used to be, in our military training. Mixed martial arts were around before Bruce Lee. Soldiers were trained to do whatever it takes to kill an enemy. It is called kill or be killed.

Special forces is an MMA academy that serves a good purpose. But battlefield skills used in a street fight by rival thugs is not so glorious; neither is a MMA London or MMA New York event.

Illinios gun-control laws would be a good reason to learn MMA as a means of defence. If the thugs of Chicago ever wanted a piece of your family your kids might have some defense.

An MMA acadamy can be good to teach your child self-control and respect as well as helping them to be physically healthier. The spirit of things is what is in question.

But when blood and gore become the entertainment rather than the sport, the moves, and gentlemanly conduct after the closing bell, then society is in big trouble. Do you really want your kids hoping somebody gets hurt?

MMA training is a great, the competion is bad. Kids need to learn form, whether boxing, wrestling, karate, or kickboxing.

The martial arts shoes, uniforms and the belts earned is great. Teach them to win but not to cripple.

The strength and skill gained can be used to defend their families or to be furthered by combat martial arts to defend their country. Do you know what I'm talking about Grasshopper?

Shovel Snow and Feel Like A Kid Again

By Douglas Cordell

During the long winter holidays as a child, do you remember how much fun it was? How exciting everything was; a ton of presents underneath the tree, the permeating good mood, and of course, fluffy white snow? It was when kids went outdoors and played out in the snow, did some ice hockey, had snowball fights, or even just constructed snowmen out on their front yards. It is something one would wish to experience again.

The truth of the matter is, winter can be terribly frustrating to adults. You worry about your kids as they play outside, fearing that they'll catch a cold. You have to make sure that the household is well-prepared for the cold season; making sure that the power cables hold, double-checking that the vehicles are in okay condition, and of course, shoveling the garage and the lawn so that these areas remain passable.

There have been recent ideas that can help with the backbreaking chore of shoveling snow off driveways and paths. We took the concept of the normal snow shovel, which is unwieldy and hard to use, and found a new way to make it easier to clear snow off. The weight of snow and the metal shovel combine can be dangerous to one's back, when one bends down and lifts over and over again. Backaches and sometimes, even heart attacks may occur from the strain and stress of this chore.

As a solution to this, we have conceptualized a new shovel blade made out of super-light materials. With the addition of an attached cord to where the blade and handle meet. The attached cord, is just about three feet long, and has an attached handle for easy gripping. With this simple design, you can now eliminate the need to bend down and lift shovels of snow with much less time and effort.

When using our best snow shovel design, you will soon find yourself performing this chore with hardly any problem at all. You'll finish the deed in half the time, and you can thus find more moments to enjoy winter as you did as a child.

How to Quit Smoking

By charlie reese

While the number of ex-smokers continues to grow, there are still tens of millions of smokers in the U.S. alone. You've probably read or heard tons of stop smoking advice over the years, but nonetheless, you're still smoking. Most people fail to quit smoking many times before they finally succeed.

The psychological impact of failed attempts can be construed in two ways, depending on your general mindset and attitude. Some people view the failed attempts in the glass-half-full, or positive perspective. I quit for two days. I just have to keep on trying. Others, with the glass-half-empty, or negative perspective, take the Eeyore attitude. Oh, what's the use? I'll never succeed. This simple bit of insight is stop smoking advice you can use today, right now. Did you learn to drive in a day? Try, try again is the key to manipulating your own mindset.

In the same vein, you need to understand the psychological games every smoker plays. Most of the available stop smoking advice tends to focus on the negative effects of smoking, such as lung cancer, emphysema and all the other horrible consequences of your bad habit. It's really not constructive to try to scare yourself into quitting. You already know the bad news, yet your crafty little mind can always find an excuse to pick up a cigarette. You had a fight with your beloved. A bad hair day. You gained a pound. It's essential that you know what's motivating you to quit.

Guilt is usually inadequate motivation. Most stop smoking advice pieces try to point out all the negatives, forcing guilt and even shame down your throat. It's enough to make you want a smoke! In fact, the current restrictions on smoking in just about every public place " or in the case of some state laws, even in your own vehicle " tends to arouse rebellion in certain personalities. Give close attention and apply a thoughtful analysis to determine just why you want to quit. Not why you should, but why you desire to do so. Make a list. Make several photocopies and post them at home and keep a copy in your desk drawer at work.

When nicotine patches and gum first came out, I thought it was a marvelous invention. Trouble was, they never worked for me. Although I smoked about a pack and a half a day, even the lowest dose of patch made my body feel as though I'd smoked a pack in the last hour. I felt like I was being poisoned. Patches and gum were the best stop smoking advice my doctor had to offer. It didn't work.

Oddly enough, what did work was switching to 'natural' tobacco, which contains no chemical additives. Here I was, smoking additive free tobacco, but still feeling the familiar withdrawal symptoms, for the usual three days. I gradually cut down and finally quit. I suspect that nicotine is not a particularly addictive substance. The additives are.

Here's one bit of stop smoking advice I'd like to pass on to you, as it was very effective for me. When your quitting day comes, be sure to leave an emergency supply of even a few cigarettes with you. This flies in the face of conventional wisdom in most stop smoking advice information, which sternly directs you to ceremonially throw out all your smokes as a ritualistic sign of your new power over your habit.

This approach can actually make quitting harder. There's a mini mart open 24/7. You tend to obsess over the fact that you have no smokes, making it annoyingly simple to get in the car and just go buy a pack. Don't throw out your smokes. Wrap the pack in a piece of paper, tape it shut, put a rubber band around it and tie a string around the whole thing. Knot it. When you're dying for a smoke, what you have to do to get at the desired cigarette requires a whole lot of time and trouble. You get time to go over your list of motivations and think about the consequences of giving in to your desire. I never did open the pack.

This is the best stop smoking advice this ex-smoker has to offer. I smoked for many years and was an absolute devotee to this costly addiction. If I managed to succeed, believe me, you can too!

What to Say to Apply Conversational Hypnosis

By Rob Andrews

What are the right kinds of words to perform covert hypnosis?

Using words that cause someone to see things in a different way is one way to influence how they feel and think. This is called reframing.

A common reframe is the glass is half full, not half empty metaphor. This causes someone to move from viewing a situation that was thought of as negative now as a positive.

You can use reframing for more complex things by changing some very simple words in a sentence. For example, think about the difference between these three sentences:

Its beautiful outside today, but its going to be cloudy tomorrow.

Its beautiful outside today, and its going to be cloudy tomorrow.

It's gorgeous outside today, even though it's going to be overcast tomorrow.

Each of these sentences describes the same thing, but by changing just one or two words you change the way you think about each day. Read these three again and think about how each makes you feel about the weather today, and tomorrow. Notice the difference?

There can be many ways to reframe things.

You can use words that make the frame bigger, so the person you are talking to can see the big picture.

Let's take an example. Your friend is shopping for a new pair of shoes. After finding a very nice pair, she is not sure about buying because she knows the same pair are being sold across town for a better price. To covertly help her make her decision, you say something like: wow, I can't believe you are getting those shoes for such a nice price and now don't even have to drive all the way across town.

You can also reframe the context of a situation.

Friend: Boy! I wanted to go to the beach, but listen to that wind outside... it won't be nice today.

You: You're right. It wouldn't be any fun just sitting on the beach in this kind of wind, but what must the waves be like? I bet it'll be great for surfing.

Another type of reframe is the content reframe.

Friend: What a jerk! That man blew by us doing 100 mph. Can you believe some people!

You: He sure was going fast. Did you see he had his emergency lights on? I wonder if he was going to the hospital.

See how someone's attitude can really be changed simply by the words you use?

Reframing is very powerful because it is a type of conversational hypnosis.

Reframing let's you distract the listener's conscious mind and causes her to listen to her subconscious brain.

There is no obvious hypnotic trance here like you would see in overt hypnosis, but nevertheless, this use of words in conversational hypnosis causes the listener to respond to things using her subconscious mind.

Keep learning about reframing and other forms of conversational hypnosis and give it a try.

Afraid To Buy Pepper Spray?

By Nui Kahuna

They rousted me out of a deep sleep early this morning and told me they were coming to take me away...so I got up and brushed me teeth and slapped some deoderant on the pits. They wouldn't let me eat any breakfast because the machines like to read a clean slate. So I got in a chair and started watching a movie.

I had to wait for more than two hours, because there were six people who were scheduled ahead of my scans.

Although they wouldn't want me to eat some food, I still had some some Rice Krispies and a cold bagel.

You can't beat that to get a good start on the day.

I had them disconnect all the cables they have attached to me and took a shower, washing off a day or two of funk, and that picked things up for me. If you can't be home you can at least be clean. It isn't so bad, I have a single room, and if I want to scratch where I itch I don't have to look around first. But it isn't home, if you know what I mean.

Last night, I had a shot through the gut. I thought they were joking, but eventually I figured out that they weren't. I may have to know how to do this within a few days, which is actually not a good thing to look forward to.

I had a hard time trying to ease my boredom, because first, there was no TV that could be considered good enough for human consumption, and so, I just read some mails. One of these said:

Dear Big Kahuna,

I have worked nights for years putting myself through school. Recently several people here have had problems when they got off work. I heard about your site from one of the secretaries here who showed me a couple of things she got from you. At first I thought she was a little nuts, but then I went to the site anyway.

I did check your products, but I didn't get anything for myself at first. One night, I came across on one of your emails about the Mace Pepper Gun. Something told me that I should purchase one for myself.

The Mace Pepper Gun arrived within a few days. I tested it out, and I usually carried it to wherever I went. I felt more confident than I ever was, and it was a good thing. Just last week, two guys attempted to rob us while we headed for our cars. It was good that my handy Mace Pepper Gun was with me. I hit the hooligans with it, and soon enough, I heard their ear splitting screams because of the pain. They screamed so loud that almost everybody from work worried on what to do with them. I told them that they should go home, and leave the hooligans behind.

And so, we left the two robbers on the street.

"Stay aware, alert, and have a plan."

Truer words were ever spoken.

Jimmy.

Thanks for the letter Jimmy. I guess I'll be sending you a Big Kahuna T-shirt soon.

Don't Get Your Hands Dirty

By Nui Kahuna

I spent all day and most of the night waiting on an MRI. The nurses woke me up at 8 AM to get ready to go. I finally got called at 1 AM this morning. (That's 17 hours later.) I rode through the eerily quiet hallways back to the nuclear med area that is normally bustling with people, and noticed that someone had waxed the floor recently with a high gloss shine.

I believe that the MRI is one efficient diagnostic machine, but it's no pleasure cruise. I have undergone about four MRIs before, but I am not the kind of person who would just act as if the whole diagnostic process was the best thing for me. Claustrophobics, like me, couldn't wait for the diagnostics to be over. By the time I arrived at the room, they jammed the earplugs in, and slid the tube in.

Since the whole process would usually take at about thirty minutes, I got a chance to learn a few mind games. On my latest MRI session, I had the chance to wear headphones, and choose the music I would like to be played. The technician looked rather surprised when I chose heavy metal. He must have thought that somebody like me should have chosen Celia or Kapono instead. To be honest, I surprised myself, too, when I chose the said genre. Although deep inside I have a soft spot for Led Zeppelin, I don't think I'm the kind of person who would always prefer heavy metal over the other genres.

Now I did have a thought when they slid me in the tube. What do they do with buffet molesters when they need a diagnostic test? I go about 230 pounds or so, which doesn't make me small by any means, but I can tell you that if you are any bigger than say...two fitty...you'd need to take a shower in KY (err...petroleum jilly) to get in the machine. These thoughts were reinforced when I returned to the room later and tuned in to an Oprah weight loss special, where many of the whale walkers lost the equivalent of a whole other person.

Yesterday during the afternoon I got a call from my good friend Jeremiah.

He asked me if I would like to take a bite on a grande chimichanga plate from a San Jose joint. He also told me that if I couldn't take it just that easy, I could go for a $8.99-colon cleanse. I decided that I shouldn't resort to the street medicine for now, but honestly, it gave me a pretty good laugh.

Jeremiah also said this too: "You need Big Kahuna tools in your arsenal, too, because sometimes, you may not want to get your clothes a little dirty."

I agree. I'm in no moods for fights these days, but even if I could work up the muster, why break the sweat?

Low Intensity Cardio vs. High Intensity Cardio

By Span Johnson

People often question which is better for burning body fat, low or high intensity cardio exercise. The answer is, both will burn body fat, but which type of cardio exercise works better to burn those fat cells.

Your body stores excess complex carbohydrates as energy (referred to as glycogen) in the muscles and liver. This is what Scientists first believed that the body burns during high intensity cardio. While on the other hand they believed that the low intensity cardio would strictly burn fat cells.

The findings are not necessarily black and white though. Otherwise we would not have so many overweight people, even when they are doing the low impact exercises like walking and swimming that you see many are doing. It makes you wonder why it is not working for them.

Science has shown that low intensity cardio, when done in the proper amount is great for burning body fat; doing exercises like walking or swimming. But don?t discount the great effect that high intensity cardio has to offer. When exercising at a high intensity your body efficiently burns through the excess carbohydrates (glycogen) and looks for more sources of energy. It will search out body fat and burn that too.

As if that wasn?t great enough, when you continually make high intensity cardio a part of your workout routine, you can eat more complex carbohydrates without worrying about them being stored as fat. With a routine of cardio exercise of both high and low intensity your body becomes like a well oiled machine, efficiently burning fat and glycogen and converting new foods you eat into more energy (glycogen) for later burning. The more energy you burn, the more you replenish for future burning.

The best thing about high intensity cardio is that is has lingering effects on your body. It revs up your metabolism so much so that it continues to burn, after the glycogen stores are burnt up, it turns to the fat that is stored; even hours after your workout. You won?t find that residual effect with low intensity workouts.

You will not get the same lingering effect with low intensity cardio, even though it does burn the fat during your workout. It is the high intensity that really revs up your metabolism to burn calories.

Anyone can work their way into a combination of high and low intensity cardio workout routine. Try interval training that interjects spurts of high intensity exercise in with the low intensity ones. This is an awesome way to boost the fat burning going on within your body. Try intervals of walking/jogging/sprinting. But be careful to do this slowly and work your way up, to avoid injury or burnout.

One of the greatest benefits of exercise, especially cardio exercise is that it increases your energy. The more cardio you do, the more your body responds to it in a positive way; giving you energy to do more throughout your day. As mentioned above, you body becomes like a well oiled energy burning machine with consistency.

Please, don?t jump right into interval training or a high intensity workout if you are new to exercise. Ease into it to avoid injury and burning yourself out. Work your way up from low intensity to where you can work them both into your workout routine and benefit from the effects of a good balanced cardio workout.

Enablers To The Left and Enablers To The Right

By Nui Kahuna

I got home late last night after making a road run for my daughters 20th birthday. My job was simple; show up with a pocket full of cash, and lay it down whenever it was appropriate, such as after lunch, dinner and breakfast for her, and a gaggle of friends.

From all outward appearances nobody looked like they were starving, but once a waitress asked what they wanted it was a different story altogether. They wolfed down Thai food, American food, and everything they could put in their mouths it IHOP. Not only that, they all carried doggie bags like I carry tools.

I didn't spend any time in her apartment since there were probably too many things there I didn't want to know about. The old lady had a whole checklist of things that needed to be fixed...and somehow the list found its way to my shredder. In my view it falls under the category of: Her house, her problem.

At the age of twenty, you should know how to figure things out on your own. Like for example, if the vacuum cleaner is broken, she should try to figure out a solution, like having it fixed, or get a new one.

Their kitchen floor is so dingy, said the old lady.

And my response is, So.

Well, she says, They need a new mop.

And my response is, They'll figure it out.

Believe me, if I hadn't duct taped her to her seat and put her in a headlock, she would be down there this morning at our daughter's flat cleaning the mess.

The old lady wasn't familiar with the Big Kahuna's Child raising rule number one, which clearly states that no time and energy shall be spent on cleaning the 12 year old child's (or older) dwelling. They are perfectly capable at that age to perform any chores on their own.

They can live in a chaotic, filthy and messy house that smells of Captain Morgan's Rum, beer, Cigarettes, Pizza, BO and old doggie bags, but not me. Let them be, I don't have to live there or eat anything from their fridge, or look for a clean plate and a glass to use.

It isn't my problem anymore, I've been there, and done that. In time, these three who occupy this domiciliation will realize and decide to clean up their mess. They'll get everything cleaned and sparkling, then they will have another party and it will come back to one.

Many of you have been sending emails apprising me of what is going on in the world since I made my pledge to lay low for 40 days and nights. One thing I have gleaned from hyou is that Obamessiah's pledge of a tax cut for 95% of Americans is a gigantic crock of crap. He knew this from the jump, but kept on taking the message to the gullible.

When the federal government cuts the federal income tax, but then adds stealth taxes on gasoline, cigarettes, alcohol, and every other conceivable item you can think of, then it really isn't a tax cut at all. Now add in that local municipalities, and states, are raising their taxes, and you have a net tax increase. Do you actually believe he didn't know this going in?

Obama promised to do some budget cuts, that he will go through every item on the budget and remove what is unnecessary, but this is just one of his promises he intended not to fulfill. He also refused to do anything about earmarks, all he proposed were lies, promises meant to be broken. He has already mortgaged your grandchildren's future for a mumbled promise.

The Dumbo-cratic Party

By Nui Kahuna

I am telling you now that I am breaking my 40 days pledge to not write anything about politics for 40 days. I will try to get back on the wagon tomorrow, but I cannot promise. I'll just have to take it one day at a time and we'll see what happens next. I really just cannot sit here and not write about what is going on.

I watched the Conservative Political Action Committee or the CPAC conference over the weekend. The CPAC was particularly interested in watching Rush of the Excellence in Broadcasting Network, as was I by the way. I wanted to see how he managed all the unfavorable judgment he's been getting for wanting Obama to fail. (Like that's not a good thing.)

And I was not disappointed, Rush disassembled the neo-marxist argument cleverly. He stated very well what Obama wants, and how he will get his wants, and Rush repeated what he said before, "I want Obama to fail."

The Democratic Party reacted violently, as you might expect. They had forgotten the same language they used to try and mop the floor with The Surge in Iraq. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pontificated that war in Iraq was lost. All his fellow travelers chimed in, including the newly appointed Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

They allowed the George Soros funded Movement organization attack on General petraeus, labeling him as General Betrayus in full page ads in different publishings like New York Times and Washington Post. This is how they treat a man who has served his country faithfully his entire life.

Now Obama is presiding over the greatest catastrophe in our history. And yes, for all you pissant lefties, Bush was part of this problem. But it ain't his problem anymore.

The Obammessiah promised a lot of things during the campaign, from peace and harmony, that he could put an end to racial divisions, brotherhood, and give two gold bars to illegal aliens.

He never liked people who have money, and he is now trying to play the role of Robin Hood, who would steal the rich people's money and give it to those who raise their hand.

He says he will be taxing the rich. Now let me tell you the ironic reality, in case you have been living in a cave down in Arkansas county, the truly rich people never pay taxes.

Obama can go on blustering 'till the cows come home, but believe me he's not ever going to get any money from the so called rich. He talks about rich, but in reality he steals from very people that are the propelling this country, small business people, who work hard and obey the rules just like you and me.

So if you didn't know it in November, you should know by now that he was never honest. He is a thief, a cheat and in no way transparent.

Ok..Ok..there might be some good things in the stimulus bill, but I really think it's a truckload of turd too, turd that according to him he would never tolerate. But Nancy Pants won that battle, and on her Part II service with a new absurd and turdy package, and she even says more is required.

The next election comes in 21 months. No time should be wasted, be politically inclined to help and support candidates that are also against Obama's agenda, support the candidates that want Obama to fail and cease him from getting what he wants. For all you know, Obama has already mortgaged your grand children's fund, and he's not gonna stop there.

Be aware, be involved, read the paper, watch the TV, read magazines. Cause if you don't, then be ready to have a government in your pants like fire ants, your participation will make a difference.

Tips For Keeping Your Home Safe

By John Thompson

When you ask people what they do when they are away from home, and how they keep safe, many people don't do anything. Now, you know the trick...and the burglars and thieves know all the tricks also. I'll explain this in a second. Home security measures do have a few variations, but remember, the worst thing you can do to protect your home, is to do nothing at all.

It really doesn't take much to implement precautions. For instance, when you are not at home, leave your blinds and curtains closed and a light on in a room or two. This way, a potential home intruder can only guess if somebody is home. This technique makes it difficult for him to see in your house to confirm it, and chances are, your home will then fail to become a target for him.

Leaving the radio or TV on will do wonders in getting distraction going. Once they hear noises, they will go somewhere else.

Do not leave notes or obvious clues to not being home. Have you ever left a note on the door for someone to pickup? This is an invitation to burglar.

Thieves today are much more knowledgeable than in days past. But they still know some of the old school techniques for home security measures that us homeowners do. Hiding a key outside your home is just not as effective as it used to be. They know all the usual hiding places. It is safer to leave a key with your friend or neighbor.

Please do not leave your keys, purse, wallet or valuables of any kind near the front or back door. How convenient do you want to make it for a burglar?

Safety starts with you and being cautious and careful. If you are concerned at all about your home security, these tips are the easiest to implement. Don't make it easy for a thief to invade your home. Take the time to learn more about home security measures. Don't be careless.

Should Stun-Guns be Considered Self-Defense Tools ?

By Peter Vermeeren

When the Stun-Gun was discovered in 1974, most law enforcement departements and civilians have started using them as self defense tools. Stun-Guns are coming in different shapes and sizes but all of them cause the same effect, a high voltage electroshock that neutralizes an attack without causing death or severy injury to the attacker.

The idea of a non-lethal weapon for self-defense purposes is very attractive and in many cases preferred. Conventional weapons like knives and guns are illegal in most places and can also be used against the carrier causing serious injuries or even death. The use of firearms can not only kill or maim the attacked but can also harm innocent bystanders.

How does the law look upon Stun-Guns for Self-Defense ?

Stun gun laws keep changing. The current states where stun guns use by non-military and non-police personnel are completely illegal include Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Hawaii. Many other states have laws restricting the types of stun guns that are legal, and states also regulate the situations in which stun guns can be used and carried. Even if stun guns are permitted by the state you live in, they might be banned by your city, so when considering whether to buy a stun gun for use as a self-defense tool, make sure you check the laws of both your city and state.

Many stated don't allow you to own or use a stun-gun if you are a convited criminal or when you are under 18

How Stun Guns Work

Stun guns work as a tool for self-defense by incapacitating the person receiving the shock. By using a high amount of volts in combination with a low amount of amps, stun guns send massive amounts of energy into a persons muscles, immediately converting blood sugar into lactic acid, which locks up the muscles of the person receiving the blast from the stun gun. Once the attacker has been incapacitated, the victim is able to flee and seek safety. As a self-defense tool, stun guns are not designed to be used for prolonged exposure, which can be risky for the person receiving the shock.

The Different Types of Stun-Guns that can be used for Self-Defense

Stun guns can refer to a variety of electroshock weapons, including tasers and cattle prods, but the conventional stun gun is the type most readily available to ordinary citizens looking to purchase items for use as self-defense tools such as stun guns. Conventional or standard stun guns are usually pocket-sized and powered by a simple, nine-volt battery. A series of tiny transformers increases the voltage in the current, which can run up to 150,000 volts.

In order to employ a stun gun for use as a self-defense tool, the victim needs only to touch both prongs of the device anywhere on the attacker. Parts of the body most sensitive to electroshock include the upper shoulder, below the rib cage, and the upper hip. Even if the attacker is touching another person, such as his victim, the shock is restricted to the person on whom the prongs of the stun gun are directly placed.

Once the attacker receives the shock from the stun gun, he cannot help but fall to his knees. The attacker is thus disabled for up to five minutes, yet suffers no permanent damage or serious injury, meaning he cannot usually come back and sue the victim for using undue force, as long as the stun gun was used legally, yet another reason why stun guns are viable for use as self-defense tools in many cases.

Gratitude Abundance: Why & How to Get It

By Deanna Collins

When life gets rough, it's hard to concentrate on the good things in life. But, that is when the power of gratitude is most important. Learning to focus on what you have instead of what you don't have will change your life. Learn how to keep that gracious attitude even when it's not easy.

Why is a Gracious Attitude Important?

When you look at life in a grateful manner, your perspective on a lot of things begins to change. For instance, you:

Look at faults as potential blessings. It's easy to lay blame at someone else's feet and leave it there. It is a lot harder to look past someone's mistakes and see their potential. That goes for your mistakes too.

Look at people with new eyes. People are seen for whom they are and not the sum total of their possessions or their character traits. Living in harmony with others fosters a happy fulfilled life.

Don't pass judgment on yourself or others. See people for who they are and have the potential to be. Praise them and be grateful for their strengths.

Show mercy. Everyone has not learned to be gracious and live a better life yet. From your place of gratitude, be merciful and encourage it in others.

See good things multiply in your life as you concentrate on them and not the bad times. Concentrating on bad circumstances lets them loom larger than life and bring you down. On the other hand, looking to the good times attracts more good times in your life because that is what you choose to expect.

Attaining Gratitude Abundance in your Life

Always know what you are grateful for in life. If you want, make a list. Each day, read the list and add more to it as you feel the need. Some of your blessings that you may easily overlook: breathing each day, having food at every meal, and the good people in your life. Blessings are all around us if we choose to see them. Learning to recognize your blessings renews your hope in life and your role in it.

Practice. No one becomes grateful overnight. It takes time and consistency to develop an attitude of gratitude. Instead of falling asleep worrying about your challenges, concentrate on the people and situations in your life that you are grateful for so you can get a good night's rest and wake refreshed and without a care in the world.

Incorporate it into your daily life. There are many rituals you can incorporate into your life and your daily routine to bring gratitude abundance into your life. Gratitude jewelry, journals, rituals like taking a bath every night or having a massage weekly, meditation and good food and friends also help us recognize and celebrate the positive.

Find ways to help others. Paying it forward puts the focus on others and not us. Give to charity, volunteer at a shelter, or show support on a case by case basis. Change the world one person at a time.

Clear away those things which are not important to you. Finally, to invite more gratitude into your life consider removing those things which do not make you feel good. Eliminate those things which make you feel negative about life and which detract from your life.

Will you accept abundance in your life? Begin by being grateful for what you have and letting it change your life.

Eating and Exercise: In Mutual Action

By Vinnce McCann

We exercise at the aim of maintaning good health. To make this possible, we also acknowledge the role of proper diet which will keep our bodies in the right condition for work out and throughout our daily tasks. To maximize the potential of every work out, you should understand tha value of a pre and post workout meal. We will delve deeper into it as we go through.

Whether you are up for a cardio or a resistance workout, it is very important that maintain a balanced combination of carbohydrates and protein. The amount of carbs and protein which needs to be taken in by the body will have to depend on the kind of exercise which you are about to do and the intensity of the activity.

Your pre workout meal should be ideally taken at least an hour or so before you start you work out. Take a meal with a calorie content of 200 if you are planning on a low intensity level exercise. A high-intensity physical activity on the other hand will need between 4,000 to 5,000 content of calorie.

A combination of protein and carbs is very ideal after your resistance exercise. Unlike cardio activities, resistance work outs break muscle tissues through production of micro tears.

To repair and build up these tears, you will need protein so that your muscles increase in strength and size. Carbohydrates will not only replace of your lost muscle glycogen, it will also help the protein get through muscle cells allowing it to synthesize into structural protein.

After you finish your resistance exrcise, it is very important that you wait for 30 minutes before you start eating. This way, you won't be taking blood away from your muscles too fast. The blood in your muscles will also help repair process as it aids in removing metabolic waste products.

Getting a Home Security Alarm System

By Artur Knowles

Knowing the kind of home security alarm system that you need for your home is easy. There may be different technologies to choose from, but the important thing is that the home security alarm system exists for one purpose: to protect you, your family and all the things that you consider valuable.

What It's All About

A home security alarm system is made up of various components that work together in the full security of your household. Ultimately, the home security alarm system will work to set off signals that will help you to determine the next action; this may be taking matters into your own hands with an intruder or calling the police to handle things for you. Whatever the case is, it is the home security alarm system that will help you to determine that there is an intrusion and possible threat to your home.

How Does It Work?

Your home security alarm system may include the following: cameras, motion detection devices, electronic door locks, and silent or noisy alarms. They can be used in a number of ways.

The cameras can be used to monitor activities around the house, providing visuals that can be in real time or can be recorded for later viewing. The motion detection devices can be set up in a way that once the beams that they emit in between them are disturbed (or tripped like a wire is tripped), then an alarm is set off which can help prompt you to call the police.

With electronic door locks, it works the same way as any ordinary lock except that people who enter and leave must know the combination in order to open it. Anybody who does not know the combination will set off the alarm and will more than likely be a trespasser or intruder. These are the different functions of the components in a home security alarm system.

Where They Can Be Bought

A Home security alarm system is not something that you can buy in just any store. There are security shops that specialize in the providing and installation of all the components needed in a home security alarm system. The people who operate these shops are trained well and some of them also have reputations in the innovation of more products that will increase home security.

Which security store to go to is a decision that only you can make. The only advice is that you look into the company background of these different shops and see if the people involved in them can be trusted. Otherwise, you can always research how to set up your own home security learn system and just buy the components that you will need.

A system of home security alarm is one of the most important technology that you can equip your home with. It is there to make you aware when there are intruders or burglars in your home and this will increase the chances of them being caught by the police. If you don't have a home security alarm system to protect your valuable things, then consider looking into investing in one today.

Snow Shovels For Your Back

By Douglas Cordell

Winter is a time of joy, but it can also be a harsh reminder of our mortality. The holidays bring with it a number of deaths; ranging from an increased crime rate caused by the increased salary, to the terribly mundane but no less tragic accidents caused by the weather. Leading amongst these are the fatalities caused by heart attacks, which occur while simply shoveling snow, no less.

Before you buy that snow shovel, take the time to consider the dangers involved. Why do these people suffer an attack while shoveling snow? A lot of it stems from the amount of energy that is all used up at the same time. You bend over to position the shovel properly, you use arm strength to lift off the snow, and you walk around so that you are able to toss the snow aside. What's more, you wouldn't notice these things immediately, so you may be exerting a lot more energy than what your heart is used to these days.

Thankfully, these concerns are now being addressed, and improvements upon the snow shovel's basic design are now being made. A new alternative to snow shoveling is now available, and it is the safest choice compared to the snow shovel or even the large and unwieldy tractors. I would want you to take a look at the wovel.

The wovel is made up of a super-light snow shovel with a three to four foot wooden handle. When compared to the regular old shovel, it's much lighter and easier to use. You scoop up more snow at once, which leads to you finishing your task earlier. You will have more time for the important tasks you need to get to, all thanks to the wovel.

Attached to the area where the blade meets the handle, you will see a flexible cord, about thirty inches long. With this contraption, you are able to hold the cord so that you maintain an upright position. That way, your back is not strained while you're shoveling. You will be able to breathe easier, and you can continue living a healthy life.

Can You Really Use Covert Hypnosis While Talking With Someone?

By Rob Andrews

Have you ever met somebody who seemed to be able to convince anybody to do anything, just by talking to them. You know, like the salesman who can sell ice to Eskimos?

Why are some people able to do this and other aren't?

Conversational hypnosis is one way of influencing others by simply talking with them.

Let me tell you what conversational hypnosis is.

Conversational hypnosis is not about placing people in deep trances, like a professional hypnotist would do in his office.

What it is about is using language that by-passes someone's conscious brain and makes suggestions directly to the subconscious mind. Using the words of the conversation to directly communicate with the subconscious mind of the listener is conversational hypnosis.

Robert Dilts is an expert in this field. He refers to this type of language as sleight of mouth. He explains that language provides a map of our world and each person lives in her own world (pretty deep stuff, huh?).

He means that every person views the world in a unique way, and language is used to describe their world and even further to actually create their world.

To put it simply, when you discuss something in a specific way, you are actually directing your mind to think of it in that way. To give an example, a person who constantly complains that she hates school, will reinforce that she hates school. She will actually make her words into her reality.

So what does this have to do with conversational hypnosis?

Similar to how you created the reality of hating school by merely talking about it, you will influence other people to hate school also by speaking to them in this way.

This gives the expression attitudes are contagious a whole new meaning. You see, not only do someone's words influence their mind to create a new reality, they influence others in the same way.

Words you hear infect your subconscious brain just like a virus you get infects your physical body. So if you hang around friends who use constantly use words to express that they hate school, then it is quite possible you will start to feel that way too. Not because you agree with their logical argument, but rather because the words they use to describe their feelings will penetrate your subconscious mind.

This is because words are powerful! One of the reasons words are so powerful is that the subconscious mind soaks them up like a sponge.

The subconscious mind is always aware of what's going on around you. In fact, that's were most of a person's thinking goes on. But the subconscious is easily influenced by what people around you are saying.

So if you use the right kinds of words you can really change the way you, and others, see the world. And what are the right kinds of words? Ahhhhhh, thats a good question. But youll have to wait until part 2 of this article, or visit my blog.

Meditation with Snow Shovels

By Douglas Cordell

As you start to ripen in years, your longing for the fast paced lifestyle becomes less and less. Instead, you will prefer to just hang back and watch the world from a much more leisurely pace. Why try to catch up with the world? Nothing beats the down-to-earth feeling of staying where you're comfortable. One must, after all, often pause to enjoy life.

Your outlook is similar when you are clearing the snow in your front lawn. The younger people, in their constant need to do things the fast way, buy quick and noisy machines that do the job in minutes. But that's not for you, for you prefer the time to ponder on the fond memories gone by. You have experienced many winters, and you recall each of them as you shovel.

At least, you would have if shoveling snow doesn't take that much effort. Shoveling snow is not that easy, and it takes considerably more effort as you count years. Stooping down, you will note at how you expose your back to harm as you scoop a considerable weight, and it becomes very tiring to simply toss the snow aside.

It is thus a blessing for you to know that there have been modifications to the classic snow shovel that you love. Today's best snow shovels feature many new things; most notably a bungee cord attached to its midsection. Extending to just below thirty inches in length, it allows you to hold the shovel while remaining upright, keeping your back safe.

The cord not only keeps your back safe; its elastic nature also allows lends energy that you don't have to use yourself. Shoveling snow thus turns into a relaxing activity, and you are able to do it at your own leisure. Truly, this invention keeps all the benefits of using the snow shovel without any of its drawbacks.

Stay Healthy as You Shovel Snow

By Douglas Cordell

It has been shown that there are a number of Americans who die of heart attack each year. Among these unlucky souls, a small subset of them suffers the attack while doing the seemingly innocent task of shoveling snow. To these statisticians, however, the subset is small enough to be considered negligible. It's funny how some people seem to devalue human life and well being to "interpretable data".

The amount of effort needed to use a snow shovel efficiently is the culprit in these cases. Include the fact that everyone, including our older friends who are no longer used to physical strain, needs to to shovel snow, and you'll understand why these unfortunate accidents occur. Still, even with the alternatives in the market, the snow shovel remains cheaper and simpler to use. So it comes as no surprise that most Americans prefer it to this day.

It has been decided, then, that improvements to the original snow shovel design are in order. I have recently found an innovative invention that does exactly that. My friends; let me introduce you to the wovel.

Now what is this wovel I'm talking about, and what makes it different from the standard shovel? Simply put, the wovel is indeed a standard shovel in many ways, but has a few minute differences that make it superior. First of all, it is composed of a light, yet durable material. Where shovel blade and handle intersect, a third part is attached. This new part is a bungee-like cord, stretching more than two feet long. The bungee cord itself ends in a handle much like that in the shovel proper itself.

The science in the wovel is easy to understand; by attaching a cord that can be easier to grasp than the tip of the shovel blade, you no longer have to bend down while working. You are thus able to properly utilize your upper body strength more without endangering it. Also, the elasticity of the cord itself lends some energy to the swing of the wovel. You are eased off a lot of the required energy, and you don't put yourself in danger. What else can you ask for?
