Lead the Way to Innovation by Getting Out of the Way

In our intensely competitive global economy, be it pharmaceuticals, electronics, software or OTC products, the name of the game is innovation. The key to staying on top is getting to the next big idea and turning it into a marketable product or service"and doing it faster than the competition or the private label distributors. How can we lead with innovation as our goal? Everybody knows that the best ideas rarely come from the top; we also know that people usually do not come up with innovations while sitting at the computer checking e-mails, listening to voicemails or sitting in on the production forecast meeting.

The creativity that spawns innovation transcends the daily grind of the workplace and often shows up in unexpected areas. Great ideas come in dreams, from reading magazines you normally wouldn't pick up, seeing a movie, meeting new people, eating at a new restaurant, traveling to a foreign land and scores of other daily human activities that are unattached to the structural demands of traditional office life in corporate America.

The question I put to leaders is this: how can we reengineer office life to serve innovation? For many years, the function of office life was to serve production. Production is orderly, has concrete goals, benchmarks to meet, quotas to produce, etc. But as fast as markets move and shift, building an office environment around production only is no longer appropriate. Such an environment produces the illusion of stability in the marketplace.

Innovations happen when we don't have a specific goal in mind. A powerful innovation leaps over goals and staid thinking to create a new and bold strategy. Today, more than ever, we need creative offices where innovation is encouraged, not orderly offices where status quo thought and performance are repeated day after day.

It is our leaders who are charged with making this happen. Leaders must somehow find a way to tap into their people's imaginations and set them free to roam in uncharted territory. Leaders need to be prepared to put a process in motion and then get out of the way so that the boundless creativity of their people takes over. Much different than the old time autocrats, today's leader must be a creative facilitator - someone who understands how to provide people with a less stressful environment that allows for the playful experimentation that leads to innovation.

I advise my clients to bring together a diverse group of people and meet off-site one morning a month, using a different creative facilitator every time (not the boss!). No phones, no computers and no interruptions. A well-facilitated three hours are all the group needs to go off and dream about the "Big Idea."

During these creative three hours, group members can focus their full attention on what's out there and get clarity on what they've been thinking about for the last month, what they've been reading, seeing, experiencing and hearing about from customers, the sales people, the media, other cultures, popular culture, compatible or incompatible industries, etc. The group then needs to consider the ideas they believe they can all get behind to meet and/or exceed the challenges at hand.

Next, the group drills down to the four or five concepts that best fit the company culture and have the substance to promote what Andy Grove calls a 10x change. It is then - when they think one particular idea makes sense and is executable - that they are charged with making it happen. They present it to the powers that be, or to whomever they report. And the key for the leader here is to get out of the way of the "Big Idea" and let it find its footing in the real world.

Remarkable things happen when upper management communicates that it supports and values these brainstorming sessions - that they are not just some nice activity, but are actually at the heart of a new business model based on innovation. Then people approach these monthly meetings having really done their homework. They are fired up because they know they can potentially come out with a "Big Idea" that will impact the real world of their business. They become aware of how much trust the leadership has in their creative abilities. And in today's knowledge-based creative economy, where workers are after the next big intellectual challenge, such a leadership practice has the incredible side effect of bolstering employee retention.

For the leader who nourishes this kind of forward-looking "Big Idea" thinking within the ranks, it would be foolish not to let some of the best ideas run their course. Allow people to fail. Not every great idea can be a commercial marketable innovation, but some will be - and they make the ultimate difference.

Sometimes we get stuck in our thinking about leadership. I suggest that today's leaders should be charged with allowing some chaos - at least enough to produce that elusive eureka! moment that can transform their company from average to extraordinary.

Smoking is Like A Smoking Gun For Heart Disease

Ignorance is no excuse to suffer from heart disease associated with smoking. For years doctors have tried to preach the dangers of smoking to the public, making the dangers widely known. Some people still choose to not take these warnings seriously. You may think it will never happen to you but is it really worth the risk?

Among the thousands of chemicals in cigarettes at least 60 of them are considered toxic to our bodies. Each time you inhale you are allowing these toxins to flow freely through your blood stream. Over time your body starts to show the affects of the toxins as your arteries begin to harden. Once this has happened your body is open to suffering from heart attacks, heart failure, and instant death.

Your body doesn't care if you've smoked one pack of cigarettes, or three hundred, yet there are people that still ask if I smoke only two cigarettes a day am I still at risk? That's like someone asking if I stand on the train tracks between 1pm and 2 pm am I still at risk of being hit by a speeding train.

Each person's body is different this is why a doctor can't tell you yes you can smoke a pack a day for a year and not have this affect you, because only your body can decide when it has had all it can take. Your family history can't be avoided, especially when adding smoking as another factor you are at higher risk of heart disease than the average person.

Each time you pick up a cigarette and light it around a non smoker you are also putting them at risk, even though they didn't make the same choices you did. This is why it is suggested if you have to smoke you should go to an open outdoor area away from others.

If the cigarette company listed the thousands of chemicals that were in their cigarettes on each pack the risk of heart disease would surely drop, because people would be repulsed at what they were putting in their mouths. These toxins are what contribute to fatty deposits building up in our arteries. For women who smoke and take certain birth control they have even higher chances of suffering from heart disease than the average person.

So the next time you or a loved one lights that cigarette just remember they are one step closer to that speeding train, and the only way to slow it down is to quit smoking. Although it's a tough choice to quit it is the only thing that is keeping you from leading a healthy life.

What is Your Emergency Plan?

Everyone should have an emergency plan that is developed well in advance of any disaster that might hit their area. Some of us live in zones more prone to certain natural disasters such as tornadoes, active volcanoes, hurricaines, floods,tsunami areas, etc. At school we learn what to do if an earthquake or other disaster strikes, but families and individuals should have a plan in place that will help us cope effectively at home with an emergency.

An ideal list would include the following concerns that you have discussed with your children and partner:

- contact person in and out of town.

- health information and where documents are stored.

- a designated person who you are comfortable picking up the children if you cannot.

- a person designated to pick up your child or family if you are unable to.

- location of water valve, fire extinguisher, electrical box, gas valve, floor drain.

- what to do with pets and their place of priority in the family, i.e. emphasis on people before pets for safety. This is a touchy subject until you have lost a loved one and realize the devastation that is compared to a beloved pet. See more information on this on my site.

Calling 9-1-1 " this needs to be clearly explained. The times to call 911 are for reporting crimes, fires and to save a life.

During an emergency, follow your emergency plan, take your emergency kit which you should have put together ahead of time, keep a listening ear on the radio and television for alert updates and evacuation orders, stay where you are until all is safe or until evacuation is ordered.

One of the biggest mistakes we make is forgetting about another person being designated to pick up family members. A password for children should be assigned, in order for them to know when it is okay to go with another person. This password should be frequently tested in order to ensure it is still in their minds. They need to know they cannot share this password with anyone. Its hilarious providing scenarios and seeing them handle themselves with a password, but in real life, it is not funny if they are vulnerable to leave with someone they shouldnt. Practice scenarios so they know what to do regardless of what the person tells them.

The 72-hour emergency plan has been established worldwide as a time period for people to be completely organized for, i.e. having supplies and a survival plan in the event of a disaster.

Part of an emergency plan is knowing what to do in specific scenarios. If you are outdoors, stay away from trees, walls, power lines and other buildings. If you are driving, stay away from bridges, buildings, power lines, and stay in the car off the side of the road until the tremors have ceased. In the home, identify heavy furniture to drop under and hide, how to cover your head and torso to protect from flying objects and heavy items falling, windows and outer walls to stay away from.

The Law of Attraction Can Help You, But Only If You Let It

Whether youve seen the movie the Secret, or youve just been reviewing coaching and mentoring programs recently, chances are that you have already heard of the Law of Attraction. It basically states that if you know exactly what you want, you ask the Universe for it, behave as though it is on the way, and then be open to receiving it, you can get whatever you want.

Okay, so what is the Law of Attraction, again? Its the idea that if you really want something, ask the universe to give it to you, take consistent action to achieve this want, and are open to receiving it when it comes, you will be able to have and accomplish anything that you may desire.

Seriously, many people believe this to be no less true than the Law of Gravity. We are all subject to the Law of Attraction, whether we know it or not. The trick is to learn more about how it works so that we can use it to our advantage.After all, the first step is to know what we want, and then having the confidence that we can indeed make it a possibility. Whether or not you believe that the Law of Attraction is real, most of us can believe that this is an essential part of any successful enterprise.

For example, the first step is to ask the Universe what you want. Its recommended that you are very clear about it. A lot of times, you are also required to write it down in order to increase the chance of it working. Of course, this can just be interpreted as setting tangible goals, which, whether or not you believe in the Law of Attraction, is going to be an essential step in having success in any sort of enterprise. Time and time again, we see that people who first take the time to define what it is that they want from their efforts will be more consistently rewarded.

The other half, behaving as though something is on the way and then, when it presents itself, being open to receiving it, demonstrates nothing more than the power of positive thinking. Positive thinking is so much more effective than negative thinking in every scenario. In fact, Im surprised that so many people are negative by nature. What does it ever help?

Of course, the last step is acceptance. In order for us to reap the benefits of our efforts, we have to be open to taking advantage of the opportunities when they present themselves. A lot of times, we dont get what we want in the form that we had originally imagined. When this happens, we often fail to recognize opportunities for what they really are, and we let them pass us by.

The prophecies that we make for ourselves are self-fulfilling not because of the mysteries of the universe, but because we, ultimately, are the ones that make our own destinies. I can want something to work out for me, but if I dont believe that it will, how can it?

So basically, you can believe that the Law of Attraction is the forces of nature working for you, or you can believe that it is you making everything happen. Either way, you will get results.

Common Failures of Lap Band

Lap Band surgery has been hailed as being one of the easiest ways for a person to lose weight, but truth be told there are definitely some problems with the procedure. While these problems are not exactly endemic or typical of lap band surgeries, they are problems that can cause intense problems for the people that have undergone the surgery and for that reason are failures that people should know about before they actually go ahead and have the surgery done. The two most common failure of lap band would have to be migration errors and erosion errors.

The migration error is an error that takes place when the band that is being used actually ends up moving from one part of the stomach to another. The whole point of the lap band surgery is that when the band is inserted into the body, it can then be used to constrict the stomach and in doing so it can then be used by the person with the band to regulate the amount of food that they take in. However, the band is operating in an area of the body that does not have a large amount of friction and for that reason the natural movements of the human body over time can cause the band to move from one part of the stomach to another or even get dislodged from the stomach entirely in severe cases. This not only completely cancels the effectiveness of the band, but it also means that another operation needs to be scheduled in order for the doctor to go in and replace the band or maybe even remove it entirely if that is what the patient now wants.

The erosion error is an error that has similar results, although for a different reason. Rather than moving out of position or falling off where it is supposed to be, a band that experiences an erosion error actually sees part of the material within the band disappear entirely. This happens because of the friction forces such as they are between the stomach and other parts of the body and the band. When the person moves, the band rubs against these different parts. Over the course of time, the creation of that type of force can create holes in the layering of the band, causing parts of the band to erode away. If the error is particularly bad, these parts can then be absorbed by the body and potentially create some feelings of illness as a result. The erosion error is usually more serious than the migration error because of this possibility.

These are the two main common failures of lap band and of course they are not mutually exclusive events. If a person is particularly unlucky they can experience both errors and be in a very bad state. This is why it is important to know about these errors before you actually agree to have lap band surgery done.

Not a replacement

Remember, what's important is that you do it regularly.

* Take a quick walk to the corner and back, about 5 to 10 minutes of your time, first thing in the morning.

* If you're stuck at home to care for a sick child, work on the exercise bike or Stairwalker while your "patient" is asleep.

* Jump rope or do jumping jacks. This burns as much as 90 calories in 10 minutes.

* Do a few sets of upright push-ups while standing at the kitchen counter. This works your arms and shoulders.

* Go outside and shoot some baskets or play tag with your children after dinner.

The Six Sigma training offers different levels of training for different levels of employee. Mumia Abdul Jamal Is Guilty

When I got up this morning, the television was already on in the kitchen. I was already churned up before I could even have a cup of tea. They were discussing an issue on the Today Show about a murderer Mumia Abdul Jamal, who shot and killed on the street of Philadelphia the young 25 year old policeman 25 years ago.

The piece of crap has been a cause for the rich and famous to celebrate for a long time. All kinds of Hollywood types think Mumia deserves a new trial, and he has a worldwide following that was protesting outside NBC studios in New York this morning.

They say Mumia was framed, and the police department in Philadelphia was racist. Every year they have a new piece of evidence to prove their point. This year it's new photos. Last year they had someone who heard Officer Faulkner's last words.

Now let me tell you something. I lived in Philadelphia in the early 1980's. It wasn't a pretty place, and the cops had problems.

But Danny Faulkner was young, new, and he hadn't been around long enough to be one of the most feared old cops in grizzled blue thugs. Yeah that time, cops were respected and feared more than the criminals those days.

But for Mumia Abdul Jamal, all the evidence proves he really was the killer who had slain Officer Danny Faulkner in cold blood. Case closed.

The case continues to drag on for 26 long years, long after Mumia Abdul Jamal could have disappeared. Well the cops aren't always right, there were even in fact some cases where cops are just as bad as the junkies. But not here, Danny Faulkner deserves to rest in peace, deserves justice, let's say a prayer that he can have it. We should not forget what he did. He was young, only 25, yet he was determined to save and protect his country from the mooks, yet he risked his life and died in fulfilling his duty.

Let's remember the real story.

What Does He/She Really Want?

Clarity does lead to power. And knowing what you really want is critical to achieving your highest and best.

But do you truly know what your spouse wants from you? Do you really know what your employee or your boss wants from you? And are you clear about what you want from them?

My wife and I just spent another memorable weekend on Lake Champlain. The weather was great, the food was delicious, and of course, the company was excellent.

One of the things that made it even more special was a deep and intense conversation that resulted from two simple questions about which we decided to dialog.

Dawn and I have a great relationship, and after 11 years together, we feel we know each other very well. And we also believe we can make our relationship better and understand each other better.

Before we left on our overnight trip, we decided to individually list the answers to two questions. 1. What do I want, or want more of, from Michael/Dawn? 2. What I don't want, or want less of, from Michael/Dawn? Then after dinner, in the cozy cockpit of "Attitude," with a beautiful sunset as a backdrop, we began our dialog.

Our plan was to each offer one of our answers from both questions. We then discussed them in detail. It made all the difference in the world to have this discussion when we were both open and receptive, rather than when we were tired, upset or stressed-which, in most relationships, is when these discussions take place.

We had several ahas, some new insights, much greater clarity and the chance to be more loving to one another. I highly recommend this simple process for anyone wanting to create a better relationship. It provides the opportunity to love and care for the other person in the way they would like to be loved and cared for.

Try it and see for yourself. I'm sure you'll discover things you didn't expect and realize assumptions you've made that were erroneous. The end result is greater understanding, more intimacy and more fun

You Can't Screw Things Up As Fast As...

I do sometimes worry about the state of restaurant leadership these days I do believe, a substantial number of restaurant managers and employees that take pride in their work, excel at service and believe that they serve the best damn fajitas this side of de Nile. Some do it because they have a great work ethic, some because of their innate sense of competition with each other, and still others, of a desire to just make people happy.

Most restaurant employees exemplify the highest ideals, and elevate their performance because they want to, have to, or its simply how they pay the bills, maintain their friends, customers- and keep their jobs. However what happens in the corporate world, the economy takes a turn for the worse, some bad supplier prices are locked in, prices skyrocket, leadership changes, competition gets tougher. In addition to this the restaurants regional vice president sales are down and his salary is up, meaning he has been in the position for more then 5 years and thus all of a sudden incompetent and terminated. Where is the brilliance of replacing a seasoned top manager with someone less expensive, less experienced and in the need of justifying his/her salary to the chief and board themselves. This scenario then leads to the company deciding to, or are put into a position to, run the prices up pared with cutting corners, and raising additional funds from one area, to funnel into another. When this happens, it usually comes from the biggest operations costs: utilities, food and beverages, and the payroll. These areas affect us - the restaurant managers and employees.

Why mess with our world? Small increases in price or pocket change saved here or there, multiplied times many customers, and again by many units, result in piles of money. Did you really think that the chain restaurant upper management was going to give up their spa memberships? stock options? Tee times at the times in preparation for the fall charity fundraiser especially you need them most? A good sign that youre in this savings vortex is a company-wide, new-found awareness of utility waste. The temperature is warmer/cooler than it used to be, managers are bugging everybody about lighting and equipment turn on schedules, manager bonuses are impacted based upon the increase in rolls of toilet paper used this year to date verses last. Not to worry. These symptoms only last about a month or two at tops.

You may notice menu or portion resizing, garnishes no longer being necessary, (I heard parsley futures will be hit hard this season) changes from linens and glassware to paper products, cleaning and armored car services - even doing away with those mints at the front desk that you swore that youd swear off of this New Years Resolution. A big labor crunch, cutting service levels to the bone and pushing heart-of-the-house crews to the limit, mean theres not much imagination behind this drive for the dollars. Shortcuts in cleaning regimen or training standards show that morals arent such a bargain anymore, and the leadership is willing to sacrifice the future for quick results.
