Hence, the negligence on stacking up on emergency food storage. Even when past calamities such as Hurricane Katrina exposed this lack of preparation not only by the government but also by most families, most people still overlook the fact that they have to prepare for any eventuality, thus exposing themselves and their loved ones to depressing situations when tragedy strikes.

Not a few people, however, while recognizing the importance of preparing for a calamity, simply are unaware of how to do it. This should help you get started.

First thing that you have to learn in emergency preparedness is having emergency food storage ready. It must contain food, medicines, and drinking water to sustain you in times of emergency. Here are some tips to help you prepare food storage:

1. Determine what you really need. For food, store only what your family eats. Also, make sure that you have enough stock of easy to prepare foods like canned goods. Have a first aid kit in handy. If there are people at home who have existing health conditions, make sure that there is enough medicine for them that will last for at least a week. Water may be the most essential of these, so make sure that you have enough for drinking for a week.

2. Store them well. Keep your goods in a dry, clean and cool storage area. Be aware of the expiration dates of your food and medicines, as expired products will just cause more harm than good.

3. Remember where you store them. Storing enough will not help if you do not know where you kept them. Organize all your stocks and keep a list of every item and where it is kept so youll know where to look when the need arises.

Having emergency food storage is the first step in preparing for a calamity. It will ensure your familys survival in times of crisis.
