The Significance Of Attending A Parent-Teacher Conference

By Jennalyn A.Smith

If you have a kid who cried on that first morning when he was being taken to school, then you must have heard of something like a parent - teacher conference. These conferences occur at the start of the child's schooling and are meant to just keep the familiarization between parents and the school.

The busy schedules of today and the amount of bills which keep us on our toes will ensure that there is competition for time. To assist during this problem, some schools have started to hold these conferences over a number of days. This ensured that if you couldn't miss that boardroom meeting on Monday, then you have a Tuesday to attend a 30 minute session the next day.

The foremost reason the school would think of having such conferences is so that the parents can be given that free forum to compare notes with the teacher regarding the developments of the child and ask any questions where there is concern.

When conveying to the parents all remarks regarding the performance and behavior of the child, there should be no barriers to the truth. Professionalism dictates that both sides of the coin be discussed.

The topic of bad behavior will always crop up during these meetings. As a teacher, it is the right time to air any complaints about child's behavior.

When the child is performing below average in certain areas, the issue can be discussed during the meeting. There should be constructive ways discussed to help the child get back to winning ways. Parents will use this as an avenue to suggest tips of how classroom environment can be improved.

There is a great correlation between the schooling of a child and the atmosphere in the home or family. Normally you will find that whenever there is chaos in the family, the child will often lack concentration in class. There is also poor supervision of homework.

The parent teacher forums may benefit the parents more than they do to the school. Therefore, the parents should take them seriously as they influence how best a child is taught while at school. There is more transparency as to the operations of the school environment.
