Maintain Good Home Security For Peace Of Mind

By Elmer Abuda

While we hear about the need to protect our homes from attack or intrusion, few people actually know what precautions are most effective. Therefore, the best method of keeping your home safe is by educating yourself on the matter. Keep reading to learn some valuable pointers on securing your home.

Make sure your home appears occupied. Keep your radio, TV and lights on timers. This will give the appearance that someone is at your house at all times. That means burglars will pass right by.

There are more features to a home alarm system besides making sounds when people break in. Most of them can be programmed to alert you to anyone entering your home. This is a valuable safety feature for parents of small children since they know if their child has exited the home.

If you like to have a key hidden in case you lose yours, place it in a safe place. The doormat is too obvious of a place to hide it, as robbers will look there first. Instead, try hiding a key on the collar of an outside dog.

Don't open up your door for someone who is a stranger. People try many ways to convince others to open up their doors so that they can commit burglary or worse. Never open the door to anyone you do not know.

If you own a garage, be sure to use it to place your car, as opposed to using it as a storage. Keeping your car in your house will deter intruders from vandalizing or stealing it. If you keep your car in the garage instead of in the driveway, it is harder for thieves to know whether you are at home or not.

Use your garage for your car, not just storage. If your car is locked up inside, it cannot be stolen or vandalized. When your car is hidden, it will be hard for intruders to tell if you are home or not.

Do not be reluctant to meet your neighbors. Be friendly with people that live in the neighborhood. Ask them to look after your home, and in return, look out for theirs. You shouldn't neglect gossip. This might provide you with some valuable information, at times related to security, including information about potential strangers who you might not want near your home.

Don't let strangers enter your home. Be wary of those who come to your door selling products, asking for help, or telling sob stories. It's quite possible that your charming guest is only interested in evaluating the security of your home; if they find it lacking, they may be back later to relieve you of some of your possessions.

If you've got a garage, make sure to use it for your car rather than extra storage space. Protect your car from vandals by keeping it in the garage. Keeping your car out of sight is also a good way to prevent intruders from determining whether or not you are home.

Walls are great for hiding items. You should think about hiding certain small valuables within your walls. You can use phone jacks or electric outlets as hiding spots. If you have no unused plates, you can easily install false ones.

Your first priority when you move to an apartment or house where others have lived in before is to replace all the locks. They previous occupants may have made copies of the keys. For maximum security, buy your own locks and install them yourself. This way you can be certain nobody else has a key.

Most people are aware of the important role that home security has in our daily lives. However, not many people know how to really protect their house and belongings. Hopefully, the above article has provided you with excellent advice on how to keep your home secure during all times of the day.
