By Marylou Forbes

Martial arts are practiced for different reasons such as physical fitness, spiritual development, competition, self-defense, and entertainment. China and other Asian countries such as Japan and India are believed to be the origin of various forms of martial arts in London. The term martial art is coined from Latin language. It means arts of Mars. Romans believe that Mars is their god of war.

As the name suggests, it is a system of techniques. The techniques differ greatly from one place to another. There are no definite criteria of classifying martial arts. Some of the criteria include techniques taught, intent, and region. Some forms allow participants to use weapons such as swords and sticks while others do not. Some involve striking, defending, and demonstration of skills.

Kicking and punching are the main weapons used in unarmed combat. Sports like vale tudo, wushu, karate, and sanshou are based on unarmed combat skills. Sports like boxing and wing chun allow punching only. However, in kickboxing, taekwondo, and savate kicking is allowed. Grappling comprises of a variety of skills including jujutsu, sambo, glima, and judo. Grappling entails submission holds, throwing, joint locks, choking, and pinning techniques.

Personal power and strength are also highly employed in unarmed combat. Some of the techniques entail using the strength of opponents against themselves. An example of such a maneuver is throwing the opponent off balance. In some, strength and speed are the main weapons used. In combat, students are taught how to keep the correct body posture and balance energy flow within the body.

Combat art based on weapon entail practicing on how to use different weapons. The weapons vary from arrows, sticks, poles, pieces of cloth, to bladed weapons. Training using bows and arrows is called archery. Archery entails taking aim and shooting targets, which are positioned at different distances. The targets can be stationary or in motion. Sports that involve use of swords include fencing among others.

Specific types of this art are used for medicinal purposes such as setting bones. However, others such as taekkyeon focus on spiritual wellbeing. Taekkyeon requires trainees to concentrate in order to find their inner peace. Relaxation and breathing are the basis for taekkyeon. Trainees must maintain self-conscience and composure because they have a big role to play in psychological, spiritual, and physical welfare of a person.

People must be able to distinguish between exaggerations and what is real. Exaggerations like those seen in action movies are not for everyone. Youngsters tend to copy such moves only to end up in hospitals nursing fractures, wounds, serious injuries amongst others. They must be notified in advance of the results of trying out such moves at the start of movies.

There are currently hundreds of schools and facilities that teach martial arts to the public. The facilities have qualified tutors to teach students and they operate under a license. They provide safe grounds for training and they are equipped with proper first aid kits for handling emergencies. Rates are charged according to level and type of training one requires. People with busy schedules can have their training programs personalized.
