Using Spiritual Poetry To Enlighten

By Deanne Shepard

There are many types of artistic expressionism, each with the ability to move those who partake of them. A picture not only speaks a thousand words but it also makes powerful statements, songs bring for tears, smiles and memories, while some dances can simply transport the observer to another time or place. Spiritual poetry reaches deep into an individual's soul and touches something very personal.

Spirituality is a deeply personal state of being that is truly unique to each individual. It is the way a person connects to their surroundings, nature and the power of the universe. It is not about religion or theological beliefs, rather this attribute is something innate in each and every human, that little something inside that says there is something beyond the tangible.

These types of poems are written as a way to encourage and to motivate the individual to open their minds and consider things that are beyond the norm. They sometimes speak of things that are mysterious, magical or even a tad mystical. They are messages designed to inspire hope, make one wonder and to help them find their connection to others, the Earth and all of nature and to feel their place in the universe.

Many poems of this sort are meant to uplift and inspire the reader, to incite hope when loneliness and loss are creeping in. The right words can give an individual all the power they need to bring themselves out of a place of darkness and up into the world of light. They can create a verbal visualization of life in a more positive perspective.

One key purpose of spirituality writings is to try and empower the individual to bring themselves to a higher level of understanding and release negative emotions such as envy, hate and anger. For many, once they realize how vast the universe is and their place in it, they tend to be less self-centered and start to become more self-aware. They switch their life focus on more productive values like positivity, understanding, empathy and insight.

Words expressing connections in such a vivid manner have the power to free the mind to open to more possibilities that celebrate the many facets of this existence called life. Once the confines of the traditional box have been removed, an individual starts to realize how huge their universe actually is and how one thing relies on another for balance. A rejuvenation of the soul begins when awareness is achieved.

Spirituality is a topic that allows a writer to share their own enlightenment and beliefs with others. The creative use of language and diction can paint vivid images that may have the power to open minds and transport the willing individual to a more insightful level of consciousness. A person who is in need of direction and encouragement may be able to find the inspiration they seek through such writings.

This genre does not always follow the standard rules of writing. Sometimes the beginning and the end of the story are inverted and words are used in unique combinations in order to create a visual that can be felt by the reader. Overall, the purpose is to uplift, inspire, enlighten and encourage those who see or hear these poems.
