The Importance Of Reducing Racism In Sports Media

By Tammie Caldwell

Racial prejudice is ultimately an evil thing. However, even though people know that it is something derogatory and unpleasant, there are still a lot who close their hearts and continue looking down on those they deem as inferior to them. Though that may be saddening, such occurrence is still prevalent these days.

Especially in the world for athletes, you can see a lot of racial discrimination not only against the athletes but also against the fans. You can find different forms of discrimination in games for golf, ice hockey, soccer, basketball, football, and the likes. Racism in sports media is also evident, which makes it difficult to totally eliminate discrimination from this world.

As much as possible, people should make a move for reducing racial prejudice, if it is really impossible to eliminate it completely. Otherwise, one will suffer from consequences on that. There is surely nothing good that will come out of looking down on other people. Here are some reasons why you should reduce racial prejudice.

First, know that racial discrimination becomes the factor that prevents people who are subjected to discriminating behaviors from achieving their full potential as humans. The discriminating behavior against people can make them feel as if they lack something in them. This can then deteriorate their ability to achieve their potential.

It is also one of the factors impeding or preventing people into contributing what they can into their society. They are unable to provide their fullest contribution because of the discrimination against them, even though they have all the right and ability to do so. The society needs such contributions so it would be bad if they cannot do it.

You will see that the racial prejudice other people have against their victims also impedes or prevents the bullies from benefiting from the potential contribution their victims may have given. If they are not able to benefit from that, such situation will result to the weakening of the community. That would not be good as a whole.

Not all the objects of the racial prejudice will take those derogatory words lying down. Since there is ill-will behind the words, there will surely be an increase in the current likelihood of retaliation from them. Not all people are born to just tolerate painful situations, after all. There are times when people strike back as well.

Being in a democratic country, discrimination against anyone should not be done. Discrimination can very easily go against the democratic ideals that a democratic government promotes. That is why it is only a given to reduce the racial prejudice in a democratic country as much as possible, if elimination of that racial prejudice is not likely.

Of course, racial discrimination is illegal. There are states and countries that promote punishment for those who are caught performing an act of racial prejudice. However, no matter how severe the punishments are, there are still people who do it. It would be nice to have racial prejudice totally eliminate and not just be left as people's wishful thinking.
