Enhancing The Prisoner Transport Systems

By Francis Riggs

Prison breaks have been taking place time and again. In most situations this is usually due to bad transportation methods for the convicts. There are various reasons that make it mandatory for prisoners to be transported from one place to another frequently and hence this process cannot be overlooked no matter how unsafe it is. Nevertheless, there are some precautions that can be enforced in the prisoner transport systems so as to ensure utmost security during this entire process and to prevent escapes.

Most of the times that prisoners manage to escape authority is because some safety precautions were not taken. The handcuffs may be too loose to prevent the inmates from escaping. This most of the time results on death or serious injuries on the prison officers. The following are precautions that could be taken to avoid these situations.

Using handcuffs only is not advisable when transporting the prisoners. Other things that could be considered are the leg chains and belly chains. These chains should be made of very strong metallic material that the inmates cannot break even if they tried. To make sure they are strong enough, the chains must be supplied by a reliable company.

The abdomen and leg chains give additional security which the handcuffs may not always provide. Handcuffs give the prisoners the chance to move around from a place to another unlike the other chains that are usually attached to the facility vehicle forcing them to remain in one area. The chains are usually attached to the facility van to prevent the locomotion of the inmates. The chains ought to be fitted safely in places that are far from the officers to prevent being attacked by the convicts.

Prisoner transportation must also be done in special vans and not normal cars. Prison vans have extra added features to ensure more security. For example, the car should have a satellite tracking device that will enable the authorities to know the whereabouts of the van at all times. This will make it easier to find the prisoners if the van is ambushed.

In addition to the satellite devices, there are other devices that can be installed on the vehicles to further improve the security. For example, there must be very strong window and door metal protection that is not easy to break. If these vehicles are like the normal ones with just glass windows, the prisoners will not even need extra effort to break through them.

Preventing prison escapes must not be the sole aim of these movement systems. They should also be capable of making sure that the officers in charge of the process are not in any danger. There ought to be different sections in the car so that the officers and the convicts sit separately. Weapons should also be stored very securely so that the prisoners cannot reach them.

The process of prisoner transportation may seem very easy but it is not especially for the wardens. Each and every precaution must be taken during this process. The prisoners must be thoroughly searched before they are moved into the van to make sure they are not carrying any sharp objects. From the above essay, different correctional facilities can get some tips that they can use during prisoner transportation.
