After the birth of a child there are a numerous powerful emotions a woman can experience. They range from joy or excitement to fear and anxiety. In more severe cases however, the options available are talk therapy or medications. The specific medications used are antidepressants. Counseling can be done on the woman only, one-on-one or in some cases it is administered to various people as a group. In other instances, it is done collectively to the couple.

When antidepressants are used, they will balance chemicals in the rain which regulate moods. There are different types of the medication and one will need to know what best suits them. This is best done through consultation with the doctor. If there are any side effects, they will go away after a short period.

There are women who might have more severe cases of the condition which does not respond to treatment. In such a case, electroconvulsive treatment, ECT, might be the best option. It involves passage of small electric current into the brain. It happens when the patient is placed under general anesthesia. With the electrical stimulation, there will be chemical changes that relieve depression.

Women affected need to be able to cope. One way to do that is by being good to themselves. It is important to sleep well and have lots of rest. Feelings of guilt will only worsen the condition. Having PPD does not in any way mean one is not a good mother, hence one should not be guilty. In addition, you should not have unrealistic demands. It is a step by step treatment.

For men whose wives suffer from PPD, they need to support them as much as they can. They need not be judgmental. Besides that, they also need to take good care of themselves because it will also be demanding on them.
