Exploring Color Meditation And Why It Seems To Be So Powerful

By Robert Stevens

Fifty years ago, the only people who meditated were monks living on mountain tops and a few New Age individuals who primarily kept to themselves. Today, it is a popular way to relieve stress and focus one's mind. There are convincing studies showing that meditating has a positive effect on those afflicted with Alzheimer's. Color meditation is practiced by many. It involves improving the mind body connection by focusing on the colors of Chakra.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of Chakras, they have their origin in the Indian religions of Jainism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. Hinduism cites seven Chakras as specific energy sources. There is an individual color associated with each of the seven. By focusing on the colors of the various Chakras, the individual brings her body, spirit, and mind into balance.

The root Chakra, located at your spine's base, is associated with red. This is your life force, and meditations that focus on red will release bottled up anger and frustration. Red is stimulating to your mind and body. It improves circulation. The sacral Chakra is orange. You will find it around your naval. Orange is the tone of physical pleasure and creative energy. It stimulates your nervous system.

The solar plexus Chakra is associated with yellow and located below your breastbone. Yellow is a sign of mental alertness and vitality. When you focus on yellow, you improve your sense of optimism, happiness, and improve analytical thought. Green is the color of the heart Chakra. You will find it in the center of the chest. Green is for healing. Concentrating on it will increase your sense of peace and love.

The throat Chakra is found where you would expect it and is associated with blue. This is the area that gives you confidence and encourages self-expression. The third eye Chakra, represented by indigo, is at the center of your forehead. Concentrating on indigo promotes peace of mind. At the top of your skull rests the violet crown Chakra. This is the place of universal consciousness.

Most experts recommend newcomers to this form of meditating to start off slowly. You can get more benefits from your first efforts if you concentrate on one color instead of several. Consider the things in your life that you have concerns about. Focusing on red when you are in a troubling relationship is an example. For those with physical issues, concentrate on the area of your troubles and the Chakra color that presides over it.

To meditate on all the colors, you have to begin by creating a vision of golden light above you. As it descends and permeates your entire body, you start to relax and only then can you begin to focus on each individual Chakra. Begin with the red root Chakra, and move to the top of the skull.

Meditating is a great way to quiet your mind and get relief from the stresses of everyday life. People have been convinced of its value for hundreds of years. It's no wonder that a discipline the focuses the mind, benefits Alzheimer's sufferers.
