By Lisa Bennett

English is one of the major languages in the world. In business, it is necessary to acquire proficiency in the language in order to deal with clients in the United States, Oceania, portions of Europe and even Asia. It has now become necessary for a Tagalog learn to speak English. This should not be difficult since Filipinos have been known to combine the language with their native tongue. Follow these tips to improve your language proficiency.

Since Filipinos are taught the language as early as in grade school, you can start with reviewing the basic parts of speech. You can start with nouns and pronouns since these are necessary to construct a sentence. Likewise, study verbs and adjectives for these will complete a sentence. Remember to differentiate between singular and plural forms.

Once you have studied the parts of speech, you can proceed with basic sentence construction. A sentence just needs a subject and a predicate. Do your best to match a singular subject to the appropriate predicate. Just start with simple sentences. Over time, you will notice that you can create longer statements.

Continue to practice your skills by looking for quizzes that test your sentence construction. Almost every bookstore in the country has a book on the topic. If you are tech savvy, you can also look for websites with quizzes. Many of these also provide discussions for you to better understand the subject. There are also mobile phone games and apps that introduce fun into learning the language.

Read any books or newspapers written in the language. It would be better if these are from noted publishing companies so that you are assured of the correctness of the materials, particularly when it comes to grammar. After you have read the material, check your comprehension by summarizing what you have just read in a few sentences.

Listen to native or fluent speakers of the language. If you are not familiar with anyone who can assist you on this, you can simply watch foreign movies. This will familiarize you to the sound of the language as it is spoken casually. While listening to music is also an interesting activity, take note that there are songs that do not follow grammar rules.

Study pronunciation by using a dictionary for learning the correct accentuation of each word. If you have access to the internet, online dictionaries provide the option for you to listen to the pronunciation. Repeat each word several times and use each in a sentence until the correct way of saying it comes out naturally.

As you continuously study the language, find avenues for you to practice your skills. You can join language clubs so that you can meet like-minded people. You may also look for a learning buddy, with whom you can practice your speaking skills. Find conversational questions that may be asked during daily discourse. Pick a question from a bowl and try to answer it extemporaneously.

Learning a language may be a technical activity if you wish to achieve business proficiency. To make this activity less boring, choose topics that are interesting to you. You can also look for games and challenges that will remind you to keep improving every day.
