Fun And Educational Young Family Events Matthews NC Parents Can Initiate

By Mary Turner

Today's families are pulled in a lot of different directions. Parents often work long hours. Kids have school, homework, sports, and other extracurricular activities. Children grow up quickly however, and parents always regret missed opportunities for spending quality time together as a unit. By just carving a few hours out of everybody's schedule, it is possible to create fun young family events Matthews NC families will remember for years.

If parents find activities that are fun and educational at the same time, that's a bonus. It doesn't have to take a pocketful of money to do it either. You might pile everyone in your car and head out for the closest orchard or fruit farm to pick seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Kids should understand what it takes to get the food they eat from the farm to their table. Everybody who is picking might choose how they want their pails of berries or apples prepared for dinner at home. Cooking the evening meal together, after the picking is over, is a great way to extend the day spent together and makes the night's meal special.

One of the kids might request homemade ice cream using the berries they have in their pail. This is another great activity families can do together. You don't need an expensive churn to make the ice cream your child wants.

This can be a learning experience for your kids. Using sugar, milk, berries, ice, rock salt or coarse salt, and storage bags, you can demonstrate how liquid turns into a solid. It will take about fifteen minutes of everyone continuously shaking the bag to finish the job.

If you have the opportunity, taking a hot air balloon ride together will create a lot of great memories. State fairs and festivals sometimes have affordable rides, and photo opportunities, available. This is a great chance for your kids to see the world from a totally different perspective. You will also have a new appreciation for the enormity of the earth, and the responsibility we have as humans to maintain it.

You might take the afternoon off and set sail on a picnic adventure. Admissions to state parks are very reasonable. Most of them have lakes and offer reasonable rentals. For a few dollars you and your kids can take a canoe, paddle boat, or kayaks out to a secluded island or area of the park, and have a feast from the contents of the picnic basket you all loaded up at home. You can fish, set up a volleyball net, or wade at the edge of the lake until it's time to pack up and head back.

On a clear evening, you might get the whole family together to take a stroll. If you have a book of constellations, you can help your kids identify images in the sky they never knew were there. It is not an accident that none of these activities include computers, video games, social media, smart phones, or air conditioning. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors together without technology or spending lots of money.
