Thinking Of Airsoft Guns As A Hobby

By Anthony Carter

What to know about airsoft guns can become an important issue whenever somebody decides to take up a hobby such as using one of these hyper-realistic toy guns, which are basically made to shoot those small soft plastic or soft rubber and brightly colored BBs. These sorts of replica toy guns have really taken off in popularity over the last several years.

As a class of toy gun, the kinds one will find in the airsoft gun category will resemble some of the most well-known sidearms, rifles -- and military versions are highly popular -- and tactical shotgun weapons. Most of the time, the only difference between the real deal and the replica, in terms of looks, will be that they are is a brightly colored tip on the muzzle of the toy gun.

As far as which particular guns are the most popular, the M4 carbine always seems to be a big seller, along with a Heckler and Koch MP5 and the Soviet version AK-47. Additionally, there are many different kinds of handguns and tactical-looking shotguns. Most new hobby or enthusiast toy gun users go for what the military models, for some reason.

Generally, these sorts of toy gun replicas are used much as paintball hobbyists use their own equipment. This means that competitions among persons in teams of airsoft gun users have been set up, and with muzzle velocities exceeding 300 feet per second, these guns can really send the BBs downrange and at their targets. This is part of the fun, for sure.

Additionally, a person buying one of the nicer models such as the M4 carbine can also expect to receive a number of accessories with the replica gun. This might include a tactical harness where extra magazines can be stored along with other pieces of equipment for the weapon. Also, it isn't unusual to receive a replica under-barrel grenade launcher with it.

Most of the better airsoft guns in this sort of hobby are electric powered by means of a rechargeable battery that is embedded within the weapon. The initial charge for such a battery should be at around four hours. Like many sorts of rechargeable batteries, always make sure to charge it only for as long as is needed and then generally let it run down.

Batteries can develop what experts call a memory, and it would be a shame to be in the middle of a mock firefight with a battery that suddenly shut the weapon down. Usually, though, a good air softgun package will include at least one rechargeable battery. Smart enthusiasts carry at least one spare battery in their tactical harnesses. Also, carrying a few spare parts is a good idea.

As far as prices go, airsoft guns -- especially those of the military replica variety that have additional gear added to them -- will run from $50-$130 for a complete set up. Also, extra BBs are sold in large lots and for not a lot of money, relatively speaking, especially when one considers how much fun these hobby type replica guns can be. They are safer than paintball activities and definitely safer than old-style traditional copper BBs.
