5 Mistaken Convictions About Happiness

By Jimmie Burroughs

So what's it going to take to make us happy? According to the experts most everything we think would make us content is completely wrong. Here are 5 things we are most wrong about:

1. Happiness comes from getting what you want.

2. Happiness relies on external conditions outside of the mind.

3. Happiness comes from having a good job, supervisor, colleagues, and income.

4. Being famous creates happiness.

5. Being rich makes you content.

Happiness comes from getting what you need.

The time in my life that I was under the impression the material things would make me happy has long since gone. I have had enough to understand they will not. They do create a small happiness initially but it quickly goes away as the newness fades away leaving you right where you started. Through my life I have got most of what I wanted, but it has made small difference as far as happiness.

Happiness is based upon external conditions outside of the mind.

Is pleasure, where someone lives, the house they live in, the vehicle they drive or other stuff outside of the mind what brings happiness?

I write to you today not simply from research but also from personal experience of which I have had plenty. For instance, when I was only 22, I got the automobile I had been having dreams about since high school.

It was my first new auto; a beautiful red convertible with a white cloth top. I was in NY and had a profitable job; saved the cash and paid for it with hundred dollar bills.

I also purchased a new wardrobe of clothes; took a 6 month sabbatical from work; returned to my home town and for six months slept until I was prepared to get up; went where I wanted, which was a crisscross of the US from north to south and from east to west, 35,000 miles in one year.

I had a date with a new girl constantly if I wanted it. I partied and nightclubed across the week. I don't imagine I was too bad looking because I was voted the most good-looking guy of my senior class. So I had just about all I ever thought would make me satisfied. Instead , I look back on those days as the most sad of my life. It was only due to a gorgeous 19 year old decent, young lady who came into my life that saved me from self destructing.

Happiness is in the mind and has very little to do with external things

Happiness comes from having a good job, chief, work-mates, and a respectable income.

There are that many who have difficulty with their job and basically do not like it. To start with, many do not try to contribute 100%, and do not earn merit raises. Neither do they try and have a good relationship with the administrator and co-workers. Whether or not all those things did work out, you still can't depend on it to make you ecstatic.

Being famous creates happiness.

51 percent of high school kids related in a recent survey that their ultimate goal was to become famous. Is happiness found in a celebrity standing? Not really, because famous folks are 4 times more sure to commit suicide than average people. Regardless of whether it isn't suicide, we have seen famous entertainers self-destruct right before our eyes; most recently, the beloved Whitney Houston, and right before her, Michael Jackson and an entire string of others too many to mention. If anything, it looks much more hard for movie stars and entertainers to ever achieve happiness then almost anybody else.

The public struggles of stars and performers are reported on television and in the published media almost everyday. For instance, the number of flick stars who are dependent on cocaine and treated in rehabilitation centers far outweighs the average per capita according to numeric statistics. These statistics make megastar happiness seem to be just about impossible.

Famous folks have to give up their liberty to go and come as they please; employ body guards to protect them, and endure a nearly unending stream of fake allegations and unattractive publicity. Even their families are not safe to go out alone.

Being rich makes you happy.

What quantity of happiness depends on material wealth anyway? The answers will surprise you.

Happiness of successful people is no bigger than anyone else, according to survey statistical data!

Global studies conducted on happiness have produced surprising results. Where would you suppose the happiest folk in the world live? Would you say The United. States, Canada, Australia or somewhere in Europe? If so , you are very wrong!

65 nations were studied in 2003 and the results broadcast in the Brit mag New Scientist. The survey discovered that the happiest countries in the world with the most satisfied and hopeful people are Nigeria, Mexico and Puerto Rico, with Nigeria leading the list as being the most happy country globally. These are also among some of the poorest countries globally.

Potentially the wealthiest man in history was King Solomon of the Old Testament. He writes of his pursuit to find happiness in the book of Ecclesiastes and determines that all is vanity. He lived in a mansion, and had 900 of the prettiest ladies of the kingdom. He planted attractive gardens. He had it all.

So what makes us content?

Here it is: learning how to be content with what we have.

Conclusion

I'm not a religious Zealot like some misinformed would like to pigeonhole me. I haven't any need to try to cram my convictions down anyone's throat. I'm merely an ordinary human being who has seen a lot and experienced a lot , who has discovered that the most happiness I've ever known has come from my relationship with The Lord God . You can believe it, or not believe it. You can accept it or reject it; it will have no affect on me at all. However , I'd be greatly pleased if you did accept it and discovered the same contentment as I.
