The Pastoral Care Training Certification Program

By Arman Ollem

There are situations when an illness can take a turn for the worse and the patient is left to deal with the news that he or she will die. There is no easy way to deal with the topic of death, especially if you or your loved one is dying. With many people relying on their faith or religion to try to understand and accept the inevitable, there are those who seek a more religious approach to grief counseling. People can seek the help of professionals who specialize in grief counseling that helps others deal with death, as well as its emotional and psychological effects on the dying and those who will grieve for them. There are those who seek to provide comfort and counseling through these trying times by learning more about Thanatology or death.

If you belong in an industry that requires you to provide counseling to those in grief, you can enroll in a pastoral care training certification program. You can achieve certification as a pastoral Thanatologist after gaining the skills that can help the dying and their loved ones deal with the topic of death. You can enroll in courses that can teach you about death, dying and mourning in people, providing grief counseling or grief therapy, and how you can help those who are grieving, especially children.

The pastoral Thanatology certification program is available to those who are ordained ministers or clergy. Other eligible professionals who can enroll in the program are those who have degrees in nursing, medicine, health sciences and theology. The certification program isn't limited to a specific religious belief and can be applied to any religion. If your work exposes you to patients, participants or members who are looking for a more faith based approach to counseling, you can also check out the Christian counseling certification program.

This program covers different types of religious-based counseling, including pastoral Thanatology, crisis intervention, spiritual counseling and mentoring, and prayer and meditation. Unlike the pastoral Thanatology course, this certification program is also open to psychologists, licensed social workers, certified addictions counselors and licensed healthcare professionals.

These two certification programs are offered by professional organizations or educational institutions. There are other programs that can help you provide counseling for different types of situations.

If you are consulted on how to deal with stress on a regular basis, you should consider a stress management programs by these organizations. You can expand your list of counseling specialties and learn how to deal with attention deficit, substance abuse and crisis intervention.
