Recruitment Agencies and the Over 50s.

By Nigel Rudolphus

Professional and knowledgeable job seekers over 50 years of age who find themselves out of employment for over a year or more, are often deemed to be unprofitable from the perspective of recruitment agencies. Nonetheless, there is a fruitful, substitute path back into employment for those individuals, and that is to employ a strategy of approaching companies directly through their own career websites.

Many over 50s will know the concerns associated with trying to acquire a job interview through a recruitment agency when those 'specialists' see you as being less efficient to their circulation of income.

The first and immediate problem you will face is the fact that they will be reluctant to put your name forward for interviews even though they are fully aware that you may very well possess the skills and experience required for the position.

"Our clients don't like to see gaps in your employment history, they will tell you." or perhaps at best not bother to bring the 'choice bits' to your attention at all.

Traditionally, skilled workers have had to rely upon recruitment agencies in order to identify those employers who were recruiting in their desired industry sector. But a Chartered Institute of Personnel Directors (CIPD) Survey in 2009, revealed that for the first time the vast majority of employers had begun to use their own websites as the first place in which to post their own vacancies; more so than newspapers, job boards or recruitment agencies.

This paradigm shift in behaviour had gone widely unnoticed by skilled job seekers, and even if they had noticed the change, they lacked the tools to take advantage of it.

Jobs Direct Portal

A new type of website created to satisfy this pattern is now starting to appear. Generally classified as a 'Jobs Direct Portal', they can provide the individuals who are looking for work with a data source of organizations and immediate access to their recruitment websites and any vacant positions. Unlike job search engines - which take a much wider look at the jobs marketplace - Jobs Direct Portals are more focused, and do not inadvertently provide you with thousands of advertised jobs being promoted by the multitude of recruitment agencies that you are trying to stay away from.

The most effective Jobs Direct Portals will allow the job hunter to review an organisations career Web pages on the portal whilst maintaining in view the list of all organizations and industry areas available, making the job of looking or work directly much simpler. Job seekers signed up directly by employers are priced far less than those arriving to them via recruitment agencies.

So, when recruitment agencies are no longer your friend...seek solace in a Jobs Direct Portal.

Good fortune with your job search!
