Tips for People looking for Jobs While Employed

By Abby Schildt

The Best Ways to look for a Job While You Are Employed

Make an effort to keep your job search private even from co-workers with whom you are close. Even if you are friends with certain people in the office, they may share gossip with other people you do not regularly speak to. Regularly talking about your job search will open the door for office politics to upset your professional life. You should also avoid discussing your job search on social networking websites, since there is the potential for your boss or co-workers to find it.

If you plan to attend an interview directly from your current job, you may want to consider changing your attire elsewhere. If your office is a casual environment, you may attract unwanted interest if you begin regularly donning suits or other formal clothing.

If you already have a job, you are a more attractive candidate for an open position than someone who is presently without work. Companies often feel that present employment is proof of your responsibility and dedication to your job. Therefore, looking for a new job while you already have one is a good idea. The tips in this article can help you through this process.

Usually, it is a poor idea to inform your present employer of your job search until you have actually been hired elsewhere. Letting your boss know ahead of time may simply cause you to feel awkward, or it could result in your replacement being hired before you are truly prepared to leave your current job. You do not want to find yourself unemployed without planning for it, so it is best to keep your job search private until it is complete.

To ensure that your job search remains personal, it is important not to provide your current work email or phone number to potential employers. It would be unprofessional to take calls from other employers at your current office and you don't want your boss to overhear your conversations. Use a dedicated email for your job search and offer possible employers your private phone number.

You should make an effort to not search for jobs online while you are at your current job. Your current employer is not paying you to search for a different position, so do not do so while you are on-the-clock. Consider taking a day or two of vacation if you are having difficulty looking for new jobs outside of your time at the office. However, try to take as few personal days as possible for your job search, since you may need to use additional time to attend interviews at a later date.

Before you begin implementing these suggestions, keep in mind that they may not all apply to your individual circumstances. For example, if you work for a family-owned company, you will probably have different requirements than someone working at a major corporation.
