We All Need A Spiritual Awakening Some Time In Life

By Jessie Folson

The definition of spirituality has been revised many times, as modern thought evolves and new age philosophies emerge. Nonetheless, each person needs to go through his own spiritual awakening at some point in life. It changes us, and makes the world make so much more sense.

When we are born we enter into a world that belongs to someone else. We adopt that persons world view until we are old enough to develop our own. We grow up seeing things from their perspective and having similar expectations from life.

We could go on like this, living according to the doctrines we are taught in Sunday school, religious books, primary educators. We may be very happy, stable and secure. But we would still be blinded by conformity. We will never know anything different, yet there is a whole world of possibilities out there.

The world of knowledge is endless with possibilities. Each day new philosophies and schools of thought are emerging. Each one is different yet worth exploring for they carry wisdom and different ways of looking at the world.

It can only make our lives richer to consider these possibilities. Those who live narrow minded lives are missing out on the wonders of age old wisdom and a fulfilling life. Each teaching, each divine scripture and each philosophy has its own gems. They may be criticized for containing contradictions or man made influences, but there are many wisdoms and life lessons to be learned from these scriptures.

A spiritual awakening may then be defined as a moment of realization. It may be a moment when one realizes that he has been living a lie and needs to change. It may a split second when a person sees truth and clarity in his life's purpose for the first time. When everything makes sense.

People experience them in different ways. For some it may be a tragedy like an accident or the loss of a loved one or a near death experience. This can bring us closer to our maker and may show us signs of death and how to make life more meaningful before it ends.

No matter which perspective one might come from, having a spiritual awakening is an important experience in every human life. It is not something that can be forced, but some may argue that it can be reached through the seeking of knowledge. The more we read, explore and gain deeper understanding, the more we can open our hearts to faith and positive change.
