What To Expect When Taking Self Defense Lessons

By Lila Barry

If you are like millions of other people, you are probably concerned about self defense lessons. There is nothing wrong with wanting to properly protect yourself against unreasonable aggressors. Some jurisdictions may interpret self-protection laws differently, and in some areas, the laws work in favor of the aggressor, even when you use reasonable protection.

You may protect yourself in many ways. If you do not know already, there are basically six things you may do to protect yourself. The most common ways you can protect yourself are through personal alarm systems, de-escalation, avoidance, armed combat, and physical force.

When one faces a physical threat, one can respond in kind immediately. There are a lot of factors that determine a successful defense such as the severity of the threat, experience levels of the offender and defender, skill, and physical and mental attributes. Generally, a person is justified in the use of physical force when facing the threat of death, more than one aggressor, or when the person is attempting to harm another.

There are many styles of unarmed combat and protection. Some styles focus on protection only, and some styles focus on offense and protection. Almost all styles can be used creatively to protect oneself. For example, you may use martial arts to learn how to disarm an opponent, how to break away from a grapple, how to deflect punches and kicks, and how to attack.

If you take classes, you would learn practical methods in defending yourself against attackers. In most cases, your instructor will teach you a style based on a customization plan. Things that your instructor will base your customization regime are your age, weight, body size and type, occupation, gender, and your mental will. You have the option of learning armed combat as well.

There are many weapons suitable for protection. Using a weapon for protection is a delicate situation for both you and the attacker. Brush up on your local laws for rules concerning concealed carry, open carry, or justifiable use of weapons. Many places allow firearms for protection in the home or vehicle but not all of them. Alternative weapons you can use are stun guns, tasers, knives, pepper spray, and batons.

No matter what type of combat you want to be skilled in, it never hurts to have the proper training. Try learning different styles to give you that edge in improvisation. Regardless of how you protect yourself, you should be aware of what your local laws are concerning protection.

No one wants to be in a position to hurt anyone, but sometimes there are unreasonable people with purpose and it cannot be avoided. If you can, you should take the high road and avoid any combat, especially if the outlook is bleak and unwinnable. There is only so much that classes can teach you, but when you are faced with a real threat, you have to make split-second decisions.

De-escalation is a form of verbal protection. One can be a natural and others may need training at using words to prevent an attempted assault. Personal alarms are a passive form of protection and methods vary from small handheld devices that are extremely loud to home devices that alert users when an attacker or intruder is around.

No matter the method that one prefers or needs to use, self defense lessons will cover them. Protection is critical but the legal aspects of protection are just as critical. If one is not trained to recognize and diffuse the situation to the best of his ability, he may find himself in a world of legal hurt if he makes the wrong choice.
