Disaster Recovery Planning Can Save A Company Millions Of Dollars

By Chelsea Evans

Nobody ever expects a disaster to happen. We all know that these situations can happen at any time, but most of us are never really prepared for it. An unprepared business can really feel the affects of a disaster if they do not prepare for it. They can lose millions of dollars if they do not plan ahead. By doing some disaster recovery planning, a company can make sure that they get back to business as usual as quickly as possible following a disaster.

In this plan, detailed written procedures will be instructed for certain individuals. These individuals will know what they have to do before, during and after a disaster happens. Everyone will have a certain role to play to keep the business running as smoothly as possible. Even though business will be interrupted, no company wants the interruption to be for a lengthy amount of time.

Some of the most important things to protect take place in the IT department. The IT department will need to make sure that all of the vital information on the computers are kept safe no matter what. If something were to happen to all of this information, it could be doomsday for a company. They will not have major information that is needed to run their business, Without this information, they can possibly be put out of business.

There is no limit to the type of disasters that can happen. Natural disasters, or acts of God as some people call it, are unavoidable and are something that mankind has had to deal with since the beginning of time. Earthquakes, heatwaves, blizzards and many other natural disasters can stop a company from conducting business as usual real quick. Other disasters have nothing to do with acts of God and are due to man's acts. For instance, a terrorist act can vacate a building and leave a company looking like a ghost town. During this time, business will stop and revenue will be lost.

Even though some of these events cannot be prevented, it is very important for a company to minimize the impact that the situation has on them. Two of the main things to do this is to minimize downtime and to not lose important data. One of the main goals is to make sure that as soon as the bad situation is over, business will flow as it does normally.

When bad things happen, everyone will have to deal with the impact of it. Even so, that does not mean that companies can just forget about their business and lose millions or even billions of dollars. This is why the IT department will have to have the knowledge and skills to keep, get or recover everything as soon as they can.

The responsibility of getting an affective plan in place falls into the lap of the management team. It is vital that they come up with a good plan that will work. Besides the financial aspect of the plan, they are going to also have to make sure that they have motivated and responsible people on their team who will take immediate action.

No company should ever question the importance of disaster recovery planning. If a company is not prepared when something happens, it can be a nightmare for them. A simple fire can stall business from flowing, and if something like that were to happen, the plan would make sure that business goes back to normal as fast as possible.
