Colt Starting Should Be Done Professionally

By Dale Peck

Horses are simply fantastic animals and one will have to search far to find a more outstanding and amazing animal. They are highly intelligent and amazingly wise. When it comes to colt starting you are able to admire their innate abilities to learn from the human.

When you find out your mare is pregnant it is very exciting. The idea of having another baby in the barn is fantastic and everyone looks forward to the day he is born. Pregnancy is a tricky time for the mare and you should see to it that she gets all the supplements she needs for the baby to be healthy when he is born.

The day he is born will be one of lots of anxiety as it is important that he is healthy and strong. When he finally arrives he will be a little shaky but soon find his legs and begin to suckle. The important thing is to keep both mom and baby strong and healthy. One should begin with supplementation as soon as possible, even while the mare is in foal. This is important so that both of them stay strong.

After a few years he will be ready for more training. The early years will be spent finding himself and also becoming accustomed to the humans in his life. The more human contact he has in his early years the better as this will help when it comes to his early training stages.

It is very easy to destroy a horse if you do not train him properly right from the beginning. The idea is to do this gradually and in his own time. It is not advisable to rush a pony into training as this may sour him and he will be difficult to coach. No one wants a difficult horse and you should do your best to be as kind when it comes to teaching him.

Seeing you working with his mother, the foal may learn to trust you a little earlier than later a she will see that you do not wish to harm her or him. This is one way you will gain his trust and he will most likely come to you for loving and attention once he realizes that you are going to offer him treats every time he does something smart.

When training does officially get started, one does not want to approach him with all sorts of gadgets and training equipment. The aim should be as few of these as possible. A simply lead rein is enough for the early stages and even as he gets older one should try to avoid the more drastic equipment such as bits.

The idea of a bitless bridle is very popular these days and many equestrian federations are trying to encourage this new idea. If you are able to do this you will be doing your baby a great favor as they do not need these devices if you know what you are doing. Colt starting can be done with minimal amounts of discipline and few training devices.
