I immediately went to a place where I heard a lady scream. A big man, possibly 6 feet tall, had pressed a brunette down, and she was wailing and pleading all at once. I stood petrified, frozen by fear and the thought I was actually powerless to perform anything. I did not recognize I had let out a blood-curdling screech.
I suddenly saw a bright flashing light. It came from the person who fired something from behind. The big guy was down and howling now. Was this from pain? He staggered back, wiping his face, and dropped to the ground, coughing. Later, I found out it was actually a Mace gun with flashing strobe that had dropped the assailant.
It was really remarkable that the gal's lifesaver had been probably around 18 feet away from her. He had repelled the aggressor competently with his non-lethal device which worked continuously like an aerosol spray. Apparently, the effects-- a burning sensation to the eyes as well as skin, and also respiratory constriction-- were short-lived, and the target did not suffer irreversible damage.
The self-defense device Gary had used was not just ordinary pepper spray. It had appeared like a handgun to me, and that was one at least in shape and size.
