Aesthetic Value Of Street Lighting

By Leticia Jensen

Our streets look beautiful and clear at night because of the street lights. Street lighting can be defined as the raised source of light on the edge of the road which is turned on at a certain time every night. It uses high pressure sodium lamps which provide the greatest amount of photopic illumination and ensures there is least consumption of electricity.

The benefit of lighting the towns is the fact that they ensure safety of pedestrians. This is because these lights helps one to know what danger is surrounding them, be it from the road, animals or their fellow human beings. Where there are no lights human beings are at a very high risk of problems during because they are unable to recognize people that may want to harm them.

Street lights are also useful when it comes to ensuring drivers safety. They increase visibility and thus increase road safety for drivers traveling at night. These lights, for instance, may illuminate an animal in the middle of the road in time for a driver to avoid a collision. In areas where large animals may be on the road, These lights can protect both the life of the animal and that of the driver.

In rural areas, people's schedules are dictated by the times of the sun; they wake up when the sun rises to do farm work and they go to bed when the sun falls. This is, to put it simply, bad for business. But people might be lured into coming out at night for everything from shopping to watching a dramatic piece if the theater has ample lighting. A dark place looks unfavorable; a place with ample lighting looks special and inviting, so these lights might be good for business.

Street light poles are made of aluminum and steel this is for the purpose of durability i. E. They can last for a very long period of time. Another reason is because aluminum and steel do not wear easily. Also corrosion resistance and finally poles made of aluminum and steel have that visual appeal.

In pathway lights, the devices are supposed to produce sufficient light by supplying light in various forms the characteristics of the equipment should not be tempered with at all. When it comes to amount of light distribution this will be based upon how large the road is in terms of its breath.

The lighting level may include roadway lights, placed on the sideways of the roads and their light fixtures are based on the light level and uniformity. Another one is the intersection lights which gives guidance to illuminate pedestrians in the crosswalk to vehicles. And lastly the pedestrian areas such as side walk.

In conclusion street lights maintenance is very important; this can be achieved by two methods. One of them is Reactive which is a straight forward reaction to a power letdown for example when a vehicle hits the street light the type of maintenance taken is reactive. Secondly is the preventative and this is applicable when renewing the various elements.
