The Need To Sustain Efforts In The Fight Against Racism In Professional Sports

By Enid Hinton

In most instances, when you critically study the scenario of most unwanted events, you will certainly discover that the turning point arises from an un-significant display of affection. In other cases, it is obvious that a great deal of affection must occur in order to achieve positive results so far as racism in professional sports is concerned. For example, in sports where racism takes centre-stage. It is believed that racial discrimination focuses or chooses to deal less on individual's abilities. It wishes to solve its problem squarely by viewing it from a wider perspective.

The society is currently filled with stories of racism because of the continued show of enthusiasm of fans of sports. Stories of racial discrimination abound with the stories that frequently arise in international soccer to the social changes in the MLB and NFL which has consistently dominated airwaves across the media. The views of perpetrators and stakeholders are religiously held and are used as a yardstick in formulating comments and reactions on this critical issue of racism.

And it has a deep meaning for lots of people who currently go to the public to make comments on what they feel are their own conception of what racism is or cannot be. Every league requires leaders to be in unison against all forms of bigotry and hatred. And every little action by any person can lead to an impact that resonates throughout a nation. That single denouncement of a bigot by that single personality has the impact of causing a ripple through the consciousness of a nation.

A societal move like the mass abandonment of a racist's products and services can go a long way to the create awareness to future generations and create mass hatred for the racist. Sports participants are also expected to form a voice where cases of racism should be trashed and stiff punishments should be given to offenders. This will send an important message to the sporting world as a whole.

At the beginning of this impact made by racism, it is practically impossible to decipher its effects and can be correctly compared to the tidal waves of the ocean. It gathers momentum at a rapid rate immediately it commences due to the pronouncement by the individual and the majestic awareness created by the media who are very good at publicity aimed at controlling the minds of the masses.

Once the people have been informed, comments can be made, opinions can be shared, and decisions can be taken. Decisions like the boycott of a bigots' products and services; decisions like the suspension of a so-called leader in the sport; decisions like the investigation of the statements and the inevitable blacklisting of the personality's immediate and remote business interests. The rest of the ripple effect that continues is unpredictable.

Victims of this process suffer immensely from it as they lose their dignity, respect, power, influence and riches which therefore transform them into low-lives and unwanted members of the society as the world turns its face away from them. They become rejected by friends, family, associates, relatives and former colleagues.

A lot is required of us to defeat the ugly enemy racism in our desired sport. We are expected to voice out our displeasures in times we fall victim to this ugly trend. However, a show of affection can induce that change we all desire.
