By Lena Stephenson

Do you love horror? There have been several productions around the evil supernatural beings that you need to watch. Hollywood has really pushed its imagination to the limit and delivered some lethal doses of horrific stages on our screen. As part of our daily dread, we look at The Exorcist, one of the most horrific title of all times.

The 1973 American horror film adapted from Peter Blattys 1971 novel that had the same name. This novel was inspired by Ronald Doe case of exorcism in 1949. The movie storyline talks of a mother who is desperate to win back her demon possessed 12-year-old girl through exorcism that is conducted by two priests.

Warner Bros Production Company released the movie towards the end of 1973. The movie was well received and got nominated for Academy Awards in ten categories. It won the Best Adapted Screenplay Category and Best Sound Mixing category. Viewers across USA and Britain have voted it as one of the scariest movies of all times.

The movie opens with a catholic priest somewhere in Iraq excavating an archeological site. The priest name is Lankester Merrin. As he goes about his business, he stumbles across an amulet that looks like Pazuzu, a demon that he had fought and banished years before. He realizes that the demon is back for revenge.

At the same time, a famous actress by the name Chris Mac Neil is seen in her Washington D. C home playing Ouija board with his pre-teen daughter who goes by the name Regan. Soon after playing the keyboard, Regan begins strange actions, and makes mysterious noises in the room. She also uses foul language and exhibits abnormal strength. She goes on to cause her bed to shake, much to the dismay of her family.

Chris, her mother, seeks medical attention for her daughter. After several painful tests, the doctors conclude that she is okay. Little do they know that Pazuzu the demon has taken over her body. Her condition worsens culminating to her killing the acting director called Burke Dennings and the babysitter at night. The government brings in a detective, Kinderman, to probe these murders. Kinderman interviews both Chris and another priest who had lost faith by the name Karras.

Soon doctors recommend exorcism as the only way to cure Regans condition. Chris, her mother calls in Karras to help. Karras refuses at first but after seeing words help me in her stomach and listening to a recording where she talks in reverse, he agrees to the request alongside another priest called Merrin.

The two priests try in vain to exorcise the demon as the demon plays with their minds. Pazuzu insults Karras late mother. Karras is dismissed after sometime. Merrin trys exorcism alone. However, Karras gets in and realizes that Merrin is dead. He pleads with Pazuzu to leave Regan and possess him instead. He sacrifices himself by throwing himself out of the window. Karras dies of head injuries therefore banishing Pazuzu away again. Regan recovers after some few days and goes back to Washington. Kinderman the cunningly becomes her friend in a bid to unravel the cause of Karras death. This is an interesting story that you should watch.
