A Discussion About A Career Anchor

Every person is different and unique from the other when it comes to their orientation towards work. So, the approach of each person to work is governed by absolute values and some set priorities. These tend to give a person the direction towards their occupation. Many people have become dissatisfied and frustrated due to wrong occupation choices. Being aware of your motive and guidance for work will help you make an intelligent as well as appropriate occupation choice. The following are the examples of a career anchor.

Independence or autonomy. These people are more comfortable when they work alone. They use their own rules, time and procedures to work. They can give up transfers and promotions to gain self-independence because they prefer being self-reliant, independent and free from other people as much as possible. These autonomous people include professors, teachers and many others. They aim to achieve the highest level of education.

The technical or functional competence. The jobs they prefer to take include being system analysts and engineering. The people around here are quite knowledgeable. They like being challenged and use their skills to do the work better than others. These people identify themselves with their specialty and hence their ability to succeed and get recognized in their specialty defines their self-concept. The production of useful work and content in their areas of specialization forms their motivation.

Security or stability. These are the people who prefer to work in environments which offer security and stability rather than those that offer riskier and challenging conditions. The primary determining factor for the ability of these people to live their life is an excellent stability and continuity.

Competence in management. The primary motivation for individuals around this group is to rise in the corporate ladder and obtain the highest responsibilities. Their main aim is management and topmost positions. They have three areas of skills that is emotional, interpersonal and analytical. They use them to manage their jobs. Emotional competence is the ability to deal with emotional problems while the analytical skills help them provide solutions to challenging situations.

The entrepreneurial types. These persons prefer being active in working for themselves. So, they will seldom work for others for an extended period of time. Their main characteristic of success is wealth. Without looking at the technology and the intellectual discipline, the primary aim of the entrepreneurial kinds is to produce services and products that are both marketable and profitable. They are highly creative and like taking up challenging assignments. They have a strong inner urge to open their enterprises.

The lifestyle types. These believe that life should be made of different interests. So, their occupation is one which allows them to integrate all their interests such as hobbies, family, friends, and others. Their total lifestyle defines their life concept.

Dedication to a cause. Their motivation lies in dedicating their work and living in serving others. Money does not motivate people of this category. They like working for others, and hence the jobs they do are directly in the service of other people. They include people such as nurses.
