The Power Of Patience And Tenacity Of Purpose

By Debra Nelson

There have been numerous studies of people that achieved great success, that amassed huge fortunes or that made significant contributions to the worlds of art or science. Most of these studies concluded that, despite the fact that the subjects of the studies differed wildly in many ways, they still shared certain characteristics. Intelligence and physical appearance are not amongst these shared qualities. Among other shared characteristics, patience and tenacity of purpose seem to be the most important characteristics of most successful people.

Being patient means that one has the ability to wait, to face problems and to deal with them calmly, to endure difficulties without annoyance and to refuse to allow circumstances or other people to make one lose faith. A patient person does not complain or try to blame others for his problems. He deals with them. This is a very helpful skill and only people that know how to be patient can actually deal with the many frustrations that life routinely offers.

Many people think that a patient person is one that simply wait for things to happen. This is most certainly not what being patient is all about. Being patient is not about being idle or inactive. Consider the example of a patient farmer. He cannot sit and wait in the hope that a crop will grow. He has to prepare the fields, sow his seeds and nurture the plants. Only then can he patiently wait for results.

A person that is tenacious pursues a specific goal single mindedly. He does not allow himself to become distracted by other people or by difficulties. He believes in his goals and he pursues those goals in the full expectation that he will achieve them. In the process he will never give up or lose hope. His determination is steadfast and nothing will sway him from his course.

Tenacious people are often viewed as stubborn idealists. This is not the true meaning of being tenacious. True tenacious people have very clear and achievable goals and they simply mean to achieve those goals regardless of circumstances or any other interfering factor. They are not fools and they never pursue unrealistic goals. They believe in themselves and they firmly believe in the fact that they will prevail.

The combination of being both tenacious and patient is a very powerful one indeed. Such a person will set very specific goals and perform all the actions necessary to achieve that goal. He will deal with setbacks calmly and rationally, never losing faith in his ability to achieve what he set out to achieve. In combination, these two characteristics define a person that is, on the one hand, single minded but also, on the other hand, able to deal with problems.

Many people think that one cannot learn new traits. This is not the case. Human beings have the unique ability to overcome character flaws and to nurture new strengths. One can indeed learn how to become more patient and how to be tenacious. There are numerous informative and helpful books and websites dealing with this issue. There are even life coaches specializing in this area.

Many people see tenacious people as difficult and single minded. Similarly, they see patient people as lazy individuals hoping for miracles to occur. In reality, tenacious and patient people are the ones that inevitably achieve their goals. They know what they want and they go for it.
